Former Eagle Sale Selected to 2013 MLB All-Star Game Roster
FORT MYERS, Fla. – Former FGCU pitcher Chris Sale (2008-2010), was named to his second Major League Baseball All-Star Game over the weekend as the rosters were announced on Saturday, July 6. A member of the Chicago White Sox, Sale is making his second consecutive appearance for the American League in the Midsummer Classic.
The 2013 All-Star Game will be played at Citi Field, home of the New York Mets, on Tuesday, July 16 on FOX with coverage beginning at 7:30 p.m.
24 year-old Sale entered Sunday, July 7 in the top six of four major statistical categories in the American League, having posted a 2.79 ERA (5th), an opponent batting average of .202 (3rd), a 0.96 WHIP (3rd) and 114 strikeouts (6th). Sale has compiled a 5-8 mark in 16 starts in 2013, while having recorded two complete games and a shutout.
One of 14 pitchers for the American League roster, Sale was added to the team by Detroit Tigers manager Jim Leyland who will serve as the manager of the AL for the game.
“I thought he was [an easy choice],” said Leyland to MLB.com, who had a 28-inning scoreless streak this season. “He's got very impressive numbers other than the win and loss column. I think he's one of the best pitchers in baseball.”
The 84th All-Star Game will be televised nationally by FOX Sports, in Canada by Rogers Sportsnet and RDS, and worldwide by partners in more than 200 countries via MLB International's independent feed. ESPN Radio and ESPN Radio Deportes will provide national radio coverage of the All-Star Game. MLB Network and SiriusXM also will also provide comprehensive All-Star Week coverage.
