– The FGCU baseball team (3-2) will embark on its first road trip of the season this weekend, making its first stop in Daytona Beach to take on Bethune-Cookman (1-2) in a three-game series starting Friday (Feb. 21).

Mike Murray (West Palm Beach, Fla./Forest Hill HS)
will take the ball for the Green and Blue in game one, making his second start of the season one week removed from starting the 2014 opener. Murray went 6.2 innings that night, striking out four and taking a no-decision. The Eagles would ultimately pick up the win.

Murray will square off with Keith Zuniga of B-CU who tossed six innings in his first start without allowing an earned run and picked up the win for the Wildcats.

Nick Deckert (Tallahassee Fla./Tallahassee CC) will make his second start behind Murray on Saturday. Deckert was shaky in the first game of a Saturday doubleheader for FGCU but always seemed to pick up the big strikeout to work out of the jam. He tossed 6.1 scoreless innings despite giving up seven hits and walking two. For reference, FGCU pitching has only walked five batters as a staff over five games this season.

Opposite Deckert, B-CU will start John Sever who made his only appearance of 2014 in relief of Zuniga, tossing three scoreless innings, striking out six and picking up the save.

To close the series on Sunday the Eagles will send out Brad Labozzetta (Lakeland, Fla./Lakeland HS) to make his second start. The freshman struggled through three innings in his debut against Rhode Island but struck out four.

B-CU will send Scott Garner to the mound on Sunday. Garner took a loss opposite Cal. State Northridge last weekend going 6. 1 innings, giving up two earned on four hits walking two and striking out two.

The Eagles trail in the all-time series with B-CU, 5-7 and have lost three in a row. The last FGCU win in the series came at Swanson stadium, Feb. 18, 2012 by a score of 7-3. FGCU is 2-2 on the road against the Wildcats but lead the scoring battle in Daytona Beach, 25-24.

This weekend will mark the first road trip for the Green and Blue after opening the season with five-straight at home. FGCU posted a 14-8 record on the road last season and batted .315 as a team led by Zack Tillery (Naples, Fla./Barron Collier HS) who hit .393 and followed closely by Michael Suchy (Bradenton, Fla./Southeast HS) who checked in with a .356 mark. The pitching staff on the other hand posted a 4.56 away from the friendly confines in 2013.

Freshman Garrett Anderson (Arcadia, Fla./DeSoto HS) took the ball for FGCU in the first start of his young career on Tuesday opposite USF and after a rocky first inning settled in to toss four strong innings of four-hit ball allowing just one earned run. FGCU was able to tie the score in the second but would not keep up with USF as it continued to tack on runs throughout the rest of the ball game. Andris Gonzalez (Miami, Fla./Indian River State College) would take the loss in relief of Anderson after giving up one run, unearned, in 0.2 innings of work, facing just four batters.

The Eagle bats never got going as they were able to generate just five hits to USF’s nine. FGCU used seven pitchers throughout the game but ultimately fell 5-1. Prior to Tuesday’s game, the Green and Blue took three of four from Rhode Island to open the season.

The coaches of the A-Sun have chosen FGCU to finish third out of 10 in the preseason voting. The Eagles received two first-place votes and finished behind only reigning Regular Season Champion Mercer and North Florida, respectively.

Mercer received 97 points to go with seven first place votes followed by North Florida with 86 points and one first place vote. The Eagles finished with 73 points and two first place votes. ETSU (69), Kennesaw State (64), Stetson (60), Lipscomb (34), USC Upstate (30), Jacksonville (27) and Northern Kentucky (10) round out the 10-team poll. Both Mercer and 2013 A-Sun Tournament Champion ETSU advanced to the NCAA Tournament last season. The top eight teams in the standings at the end of the regular season will advance to the 2014 A-Sun Championship Tournament hosted by FGCU at Swanson Stadium May 21-25.

FGCU saw seven players drafted off the roster last season into Major League Baseball. Head coach Dave Tollett has now had 20 players drafted over his 12-year stint heading up the program. The most notable of FGCU Eagles in the pros is two-time MLB All-Star Chris Sale who posted an 11-14 record for the Chicago White Sox last season with a 3.07 ERA. He struck out 226 batters in 214.1 innings pitched, picked up the win in the 2013 All-Star Game and ultimately finished fifth in the American League Cy Young Award voting.
