MACON, Ga
. –
Mike Murray
tossed 7.1 innings against the nationally ranked Florida Gators and surrendered just one run and striking out four to guide the FGCU baseball (6-6) team to a 2-1 victory last Thursday night. The stellar effort from the sophomore has been rewarded with an Atlantic Sun Pitcher of the Week nod as announced by the conference office earlier today.

“Murray has been great for us,” head coach Dave Tollett added. “It’s a great feeling knowing that you have a guy out there that is going take care of business when it’s his turn. He has worked hard to get to this point and I’m glad the A-Sun has taken notice.”

Murray (West Palm Beach, Fla./Forrest Hill HS) loaded the bases in the first, worked out of the jam and it was smooth sailing from there for the sophomore. He would allow just three hits over the second through seventh innings and for the second-consecutive start would not give up an earned run. In 21.2 innings this season Murray has allowed just one earned run, striking out 17 and lowering his ERA to 0.42.

Murray’s 0.42 ERA currently checks in at second in the league and his 17 strikeouts rank third. The Eagles now stand at 6-6 and are 3-0 in Murray starts. Last season the Eagle ace posted a 2.93 ERA and a 5-1 record, striking out 55 batters.

The Eagles will be back at home on Tuesday (Mar. 4) at 2 p.m. for a tilt with the Michigan Wolverines. Anyone with a ticket the FGCU men’s basketball Atlantic Sun Championship Quarterfinal game vs. Stetson at 7 p.m. that night will receive free admission to the baseball game. The first 100 fans 12 and under will receive and FGCU baseball fan pack.
