MACON, Ga. – For the third time in four weeks, FGCU starting pitcher Mike Murray has been named the Atlantic Sun Pitcher of the Week as announced the conference office on Monday afternoon for his efforts in guiding the Eagles to an 8-0 victory at USC-Upstate on Friday to open up conference play.
“Mike has been very special for us all year,” head coach Dave Tollett surmised. “He is at the top of the nation in ERA among starters and I think that speaks for itself of what type of pitcher he is.”
Murray (West Palm Beach, Fla./Forest Hill HS) came out on a Friday night and dominated once again, picking up his fifth-straight win and matching his 2013 win total. He struck out 10 batters over 8.0 scoreless innings allowing just two hits, a career-low, both of which came in the third inning and lowering his A-Sun leading ERA to 0.20. Murray has now held his opponents without an earned run in each of his last five starts, all of which went 7.0 innings or more and has allowed just one earned run this season, striking out an A-Sun best 49 – five short of 2013 total of 54 – and walking just five batters.
The Eagles have begun A-Sun play unbeaten through the first series for the first time since 2010 and will be back in action on Wednesday at Miami (12-10, 4-2 ACC) before continuing A-Sun play at Stetson (8-16, 1-2 A-Sun) on Friday. Following their series with Stetson the Green and Blue will travel to Tallahassee to take on the No. 1 team in the nation, Florida State (19-4, 7-2 ACC).
