DeLAND, Fla.- The FGCU baseball team (18-10, 5-1 Atlantic Sun) put together two completely different games on Sunday afternoon opposite Stetson (10-18, 2-4 A-Sun), falling 18-9 in the first game of the doubleheader before bouncing back with a 4-3 victory to clinch the series.
Two individuals stood out at the plate on Sunday afternoon. Zack Tillery (Naples, Fla./Barron Collier HS) and Colton Bottomley (Davie, Fla./Marjory Stoneman Douglas HS) each delivered five-hit performances to pace the offense. Tillery went 5-5 with three runs batted in in game one while Bottomley put together a game for the ages in game two, going 5-5 with a single, a homerun and three doubles, scoring twice and driving in two, including the eventual game-winning run in the top of the ninth.
Bottomley went 9-14 against Stetson pitching this weekend with four doubles, five runs, two homeruns and seven RBI. His batting average is now a team-best .462 in ten games since coming back from injury and after slugging 1.357 against the Hatters now boasts a team-high .795 SLG% with a team-leading three homeruns.
“It was important for us to pick up the big win in the second game after a frustrating game one,” head coach Dave Tollett added. “It’s always big to come away with a series victory in this league. It is great to have Bottomley back in the lineup. He brings a lot for us offensively.”
Jack English (Delray Beach, Fla./Cardinal Newman HS) took the ball in game two of the doubleheader and tossed a solid 5.2 innings of six-hit ball, allowing just one run, walking two and striking out four. He would leave the game with a 3-1 lead but would not factor in the decision. After the bullpen surrendered the lead, Tillery came on to settle the dust and ultimately picked up the win in game two, his second of the year.
Nick Deckert (Tallahassee, Fla./Tallahassee CC) struggled getting out of the gate on the mound in game one. He would be tagged for six runs in the first inning and nine in all, six earned, over 4.1 innings of work giving up nine hits, walking two and striking out seven. Sterling Koerner (Fort Pierce, Fla./John Carrol HS), FGCU’s usually reliable long-relief man struggled as well giving up five earned in just 1.1 innings of work.
FGCU went down quietly in the first inning of game one but Stetson came out hot. Deckert fanned the first batter he faced but then gave up a single and hit a batter. An error would bring in the first run of the ball game and a three-run home run followed to give the Hatters a quick 4-0 lead. A single, a walk and a stolen base put runners on put runners on second and third with two outs following a strikeout. A Stetson double brought in two more runs but the inning came to an end on the same play as the Stetson batter tried to stretch his double into a triple.
The Eagles began to chip away at the 6-0 lead in the top half of the second. Tillery doubled with one out and Kevin Young (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla./Ponte Vedra Beach HS) followed with a double of his own to drive in Tillery.
In the third, Alex Diaz (Miami, Fla./John A. Ferguson) led off with a single and advanced to second with the help of a sacrifice bunt. Bottomley singled to center with one out and Michael Suchy (Bradenton, Fla./Southeast HS) followed with a single to drive in Diaz. With two outs, Tillery drove in Bottomley with a single to left and Young brought the Stetson lead down to 6-4 with a double to center, driving in Suchy.
With a Diaz on first and one out in the fourth, Jake Noll (Punta Gorda, Fla./Charlotte HS) singled to put runners on first and third for Bottomley who sacrificed Noll to second and drove in Diaz to make it 6-5. Suchy followed with a single, driving in Noll and completing the comeback. Nick Rivera (Cape Coral, Fla./Bishop Verot HS) walked to force a pitching change but Tillery promptly singled and drove in a run off the new arm to give the Green and Blue their first lead. Rivera came around on the same play with the help of an error to give FGCU an 8-6 lead through four innings.
Stetson re-took the lead in the fifth with three runs of their own and shut the door in the sixth with five more. Koerner had relieved Deckert in the fifth and walked the first batter he faced in the bottom of the sixth. Five hits and one more walk later the Hatters had built their lead to 14-8.
FGCU would only muster one more run while Stetson piled on four more against the FGCU bullpen to complete the 18-9 victory in game one. Tillery was one of six Eagle bats to pick up multiple hits and one of three to drive in multiple runs.
In game two the Green and Blue were the first to light up the scoreboard. Bottomley doubled with one out and following a Suchy fly out, Tillery singled to drive in the first run of the ball game.
English would allow just four hits over his first five innings of work and strand five Stetson runners while the Eagles extended their lead in the third. With two out, Bottomley lifted his third homerun of the season over the left field wall. Suchy would get hit by a pitch and Tillery would walk before Rivera came to the plate and singled to drive in Suchy, giving FGCU a 3-0 lead.
Stetson would get one back in the sixth using a double and a single to drive in the run. Garrett Anderson (Arcadia, Fla./DeSoto HS) relieved English and recorded the final out of the inning to end the threat. Brady Anderson (Arcadia, Fla./DeSoto HS) took over in the seventh and struggled, giving up three hits and ultimately getting credited for two runs that would tie the score.
Tillery took over on the mound in the eighth and kept the Hatters at bay giving FGCU a chance to take the lead in the ninth. Ryan O’Malley (San Jose, Ca./College of San Mateo) led off with a double but was thrown out a third trying to advance on a Diaz bouncer. With a runner on first, Noll singled to right to force Stetson starter Taylor Cockrell out of the game. Bottomley singled in Diaz for his fifth hit of the game to give FGCU a 4-3 lead and leave it up to Tillery to hold on in the bottom half. The Naples, Fla. native would sit the Hatters down in order to secure the win and series victory.
Now 5-1 in the A-Sun, FGCU will take a break from conference play and travel to Tallahassee for midweek matchups against No. 1 Florida State (Apr. 1) and Florida A&M (Apr. 2) before finally returning home next weekend for its A-Sun home opening series with Kennesaw State.
