JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The FGCU baseball team (22-12, 7-2 Atlantic Sun) will head to northern Florida this weekend for a three game set against Jacksonville University (11-21, 5-7 A-Sun), returning to A-Sun action following a one-game absence.

The Eagles hold an 11-7 edge over the Dolphins in the all-time series match up. Last season when the two teams met the Green and Blue swept JU in three games at Swanson Stadium, outscoring the Dolphins 25-5.

The Dolphins enter this weekend series having won five of their last ten games, including a pair of wins over A-Sun foe North Florida (15-18, 6-6 A-Sun). Their leadoff hitter Scott Schaub is hitting .386 with 21 RBI while Connor Marabell is hitting .370 with three homeruns and 17 RBI. The pitching staff is carrying a combined ERA of 5.44.

In 12 seasons of work, FGCU head coach Dave Tollett has compiled a 416-228-2 record as the only head coach in the program’s history. He will match up with Tim Montez who is in his first year as a head coach, but has 27 years of coaching experience, 23 at the Division-I level with six different programs including Jacksonville, Fresno State, Arkansas, Cal-State Northridge, and UC-Santa Barbara.

Brady Anderson (Arcadia, Fla./DeSoto HS) took the ball for the Eagles against Florida Atlantic on Wednesday, making just his second start of the season. Anderson left the game with 5.0 innings to his credit; no runs and a career-best nine strikeouts. It was Brady’s younger brother Garrett Anderson however who would come away with the victory in this one, striking out two in one inning of work as one of the four relievers that that closed out the 1-0 victory for FGCU.

The Eagles stranded six runners over the first six innings but in the seventh,  Cody Hoffner (Sebring, Fla./Sebring HS/Broward College) smoked a one-out double into the gap in left-center and gave way to Adam Eggnatz (Tampa, Fla./Brooks-DeBartolo Collegiate HS) as a pinch runner. A wild pitch would move Eggnatz over to third and Gage Morey (West Palm Beach, Fla./PB Central) lifted a fly ball to right that was plenty deep enough to bring in Eggnatz which amounted to the only run of the evening.

Mike Murray (West Palm Beach, Fla./Forrest Hill HS) took the mound for the Eagles last Friday night against one of the nation’s top hitting teams in Kennesaw State and continued to show why he is one of the top hurlers in the nation as he worked his second-consecutive complete game, this time in shutout fashion, allowed just four hits, struck out four, walked none and picked up his seventh straight win, 5-0.

Murray is just the second pitcher in FGCU history to throw back-to-back complete games. Ricky Knapp did so in March of 2012 when he went the distance against North Florida and East Tennessee State in consecutive outings. The sophomore has lowered his A-Sun best ERA to a miniscule, A-Sun leading 0.43 which now ranks third in the nation and isn’t even the lowest that it has been this season. During his streak of 43.1 innings without allowing an earned run that was snapped last week at Stetson, Murray’s ERA dropped as low as 0.18 at one point. His 57 strikeouts also lead the league, rank 12th in the nation and have already surpassed his 2013 total of 54. With a 9.50 strikeout-to-walk ratio, Murray is now 10th in the nation in that category.

FGCU saw seven players drafted off the roster last season into Major League Baseball. Head coach Dave Tollett has now had 20 players drafted over his 12-year stint heading up the program. The most notable of FGCU Eagles in the pros is two-time MLB All-Star Chris Sale who posted an 11-14 record for the Chicago White Sox last season with a 3.07 ERA. He struck out 226 batters in 214.1 innings pitched, picked up the win in the 2013 All-Star Game and ultimately finished fifth in the American League Cy Young Award voting.

For the first time in program history, the FGCU baseball team will play host to the 2014 Atlantic Sun Baseball Championship set to take place May 21-25 at Swanson Stadium. The top eight teams in the standings at the end of the regular season will advance to the championship and compete in a double-elimination style tournament to determine the A-Sun’s automatic qualifier to the NCAA Tournament. The Eagles are three-time A-Sun Regular Season Champions and finished second in the league last season.
