TAMPA, Fla. – The FGCU baseball team (26-15, 11-4 Atlantic Sun) will take a brief break from A-Sun play to visit South Florida (22-17, 8-7 American) on Tuesday afternoon for a rematch of an early season tilt that took place at Swanson Stadium. The Bulls came away with a 5-1 victory that day to move to 4-0 at the time.

SERIES HISTORY
The Eagles and Bulls will meet for the ninth time on Tuesday. FGCU currently holds a 5-3 advantage in the all-time series. The two teams split the season series last year with USF taking the last two at Swanson Stadium. When these two programs met earlier this season, freshman Garrett Anderson (Arcadia, Fla./DeSoto HS) took the ball for FGCU in the first start of his young career and after a rocky first, settled in to toss four strong innings of four-hit ball allowing just one earned run. FGCU was able to tie the score in the second but would not keep up with USF as it continued to tack on runs throughout the rest of the ball game. Andris Gonzalez (Miami, Fla./Indian River State College) would take the loss in relief of Anderson after giving up one run, unearned, in 0.2 innings of work, facing just four batters.

SCOUTING USF
The Bulls are led at the plate by Kyle Teaf who currently boasts a .348 batting average with seven doubles and 13 RBI. Luke Maglich has driven in a team-best 26 runs while Buddy Putnam has driven in 21. On the mound, Jimmy Herget has a 1.30 ERA in 10 starts and leads the team with five wins. They come into the game having won three of their last five but dropped two of three at Houston over the weekend. USF currently resides in fourth-place in the American Athletic Conference standings.

HEAD COACH MATCHUP
In 12 seasons of work, FGCU head coach Dave Tollett has compiled a 420-230-2 record as the only head coach in the program’s history. He will matchup with Lelo Prady who is in his eighth year with the Bulls and boasts an overall record of 246-200 in that time span. For the entirety of Prado’s career (26 years) he has compiled an 844-625-2 record.

LAST TIME OUT
Jack English (Delray Beach, Fla./Cardinal Newman)
took the mound against North Florida and cruised through 6.0 innings allowing just five hits and giving up one run without striking out a single batter. The righty picked up his third win of the season by a score of 11-4 and lowers his ERA to 2.37, which ranks third in the A-Sun.

Michael Suchy (Bradenton, Fla./Southeast HS), Cody Hoffner (Sebring, Fla./Broward College), Blake Berger (Jacksonville, Fla./Santa Fe College), Alex Diaz (Miami, Fla./John A. Ferguson) and Tillery all had three hits on Saturday afternoon, by far the most Eagles with three hits in a single game this season. FGCU would spray 18 hits in all, the second most in a single game this season. Jake Noll (Punta Gorda, Fla./Charlotte HS) went 1-5 and stole his 20th bag of the year, tying him for the single-season program record. Three different players would pick up multiple RBI including Berger who drove in a career-high three runs.

FGCU saw seven players drafted off the roster last season into Major League Baseball. Head coach Dave Tollett has now had 20 players drafted over his 12-year stint heading up the program. The most notable of FGCU Eagles in the pros is two-time MLB All-Star Chris Sale who posted an 11-14 record for the Chicago White Sox last season with a 3.07 ERA. He struck out 226 batters in 214.1 innings pitched, picked up the win in the 2013 All-Star Game and ultimately finished fifth in the American League Cy Young Award voting.

NEXT UP
The Eagles return home next weekend for a series that will go a long way towards determining the 2014 A-Sun Regular Season Championship. Mercer (31-10, 14-4 A-Sun) will come into Swanson Stadium atop the A-Sun standings with FGCU in second. Mercer was chosen by the coaches in the preseason voting to win the A-Sun while FGCU was picked to finish third. The series will begin on Friday (Apr. 25) at 6:30 p.m. and Eagle ace Mike Murray (West Palm Beach, Fla./Forrest Hill HS) will likely be on schedule to start on the mound. The second game will take place the next day at 2 p.m. and the series is scheduled to conclude on Sunday (Apr. 27) at 1 p.m.

ATLANTIC SUN CHAMPIONSHIP
For the first time in program history, the FGCU baseball team will play host to the 2014 Atlantic Sun Baseball Championship set to take place May 21-25 at Swanson Stadium. The top eight teams in the standings at the end of the regular season will advance to the championship and compete in a double-elimination style tournament to determine the A-Sun’s automatic qualifier to the NCAA Tournament. The Eagles are three-time A-Sun Regular Season Champions and finished second in the league last season.
