Outstanding sophomore season saw him earn the Atlantic Sun Pitcher of the Year honor and one of two unanimous A-Sun All-Conference first team selections … finished with a 9-4 record and a 2.34 ERA through 15 appearances, including 14 starts … established a new single-season record with 111.1 innings pitched … ranked second in the A-Sun in ERA and innings pitched while leading the league in wins … also sixth in the league with a .246 opponent batting average … opened the year with a 1.2 innings of scoreless relief work against Bethune-Cookman (Feb. 12), recording a pair of strikeouts for his first victory of the year … started the mid-week contest against then-No. 12 Miami (Feb. 22) at Hammond Stadium, tossing seven strong innings and allowing three runs on nine hits with four strikeouts … went eight innings and allowed just one run on four hits against Michigan (Feb. 29), registering four punch outs in his second victory … faced his third-straight BCS foe at then-No. 1 Florida, earning a no-decision after seven strong innings, allowing two runs on five hits and one strikeout … recorded back-to-back complete game shutouts in his first two A-Sun Friday night starts against UNF (Mar. 16) and ETSU (Mar. 23), earning A-Sun Pitcher of the Week on both occasions … allowed three hits against the Ospreys and tallied six strikeouts, and went on to register a season-high eight strikeouts with six hits against the Bucs while earning his fourth victory … extending his scoreless innings streak to 21.2 before finally surrendering a run at USC Upstate (Mar. 30) … picked up his fifth victory of the year at Jacksonville (April 13), going eight full frames of one-run baseball, allowing seven hits and one walk while matching his season-high eight strikeouts … recorded his third complete of the year against Kennesaw State (April 27), surrendering eight hits and one walk with five strikeouts in his sixth win … went 8.2 innings at Lipscomb (May 4), allowing two runs on eight hits and two walks while striking out three in a no-decision … established a program-record with his third shutout (fourth complete game) against Belmont (May 12), issuing one walk and five strikeouts while moving to 7-4 … wrapped up the regular season with a 8.2 inning performance at Stetson (May 17), earning the victory by allowing just two runs on 10 hits and six strikeouts … in his final start of the year, helped the Eagles to a A-Sun Tournament opening victory over Kennesaw State (May 23), going five innings and allowing four runs on six hits and three walks, while striking out three.
Summer of 2011
Named to the Northwoods League All-Star game for the North Division … played for the Willmar Stingers … went 5-1 with a 2.63 ERA over 51.1 innings of work … started six games and made eight relief appearances … team went 9-5 in games he pitched in … recorded 47 strikeouts with just four walks for an amazing 10:1 strikeout/walk ratio … added a save … closed the season with seven straight relief appearances without a walk … never walked more than one batter in a game … went six or more innings in four starts … picked up a win in each of his first three starts, combining to throw 20 innings with 20 strikeouts … tossed 7.2 innings with six strikeouts against Duluth … struck out a season-high eight against Rochester.
As A Freshman (2011)
Became a Atlantic Sun weekend starter mid-way through the season … named to the A-Sun All-Freshmen team … tied for the team lead in wins with a 5-1 record and 5.06 ERA … made team-bests of 22 appearances and 10 starts … struck out 51 batters over 69.1 innings of work … started the second game of the last four A-Sun series … team went 7-3 in games he started … went five or more innings in six starts, highlighted by two outings of 100+ pitches … struck out five or more batters in three starts … struck out five over 2.1 innings against Michigan (Mar. 2) … earned the first win of his collegiate career at USF (Mar. 8) after a scoreless inning and a third ... also picked up second win against USF (Mar. 22), this time over 5.0 innings in starting role … improved to 3-1 on the strength of a season-high six strikeouts over 6.0 innings against Bethune-Cookman (Apr. 12) … went a combined 23 innings over next three starts with 340 pitches … limited Le Moyne (Apr. 23) to four hits and one run over eight innings during fourth win … picked up third win in as many starts against Jacksonville (Apr. 30), lasting seven innings with just one earned run allowed … earned a no-decision after 135-pitch, eight inning gem against A-Sun regular season champ Stetson (May 7) that featured six strikeouts and just one walk.
Drafted by the Detroit Tigers in the 44th round of the 2010 MLB First-Year Draft … produced a 14-5 record with 169 strikeouts on the mound over two years at Port Charlotte … also hit .410 (71-173) from the right side of the dish … named the team MVP and was invited to the Florida State All-Star game as a senior in 2010 after going 5-3 on the mound with a 1.42 ERA and 81 strikeouts … struck out 10 or more batters in a game three times, including a career-high 13 in the final start of his high school career … batted .325 with four doubles, four triples and nine multi-hit games … turned in a strong junior season in which he went 9-2 with a 0.69 ERA and sported a .486 batting average … named to the Florida Class 5A All-State second team was the team Offensive MVP … struck out 88 batters never gave up more than two earned runs in a game … struck out at least five in each start … had a hit in 24 of 27 games, including 16 multi-hit performances … also added 12 doubles.
Born on May 20, 1992 … full name is Richard Allen Knapp III … son of Rick and Sharon Knapp … father played baseball at Virginia Tech, was selected by the Texas Rangers in the 41st round of the 1983 draft and is currently the pitching coordinator for the Los Angeles Dodgers … has an older sister, Leah (21) … civil engineering major.
