Wohlleb Joins FGCU Men's Basketball Program
FORT MYERS, Fla. – Florida Gulf Coast University men’s basketball coach Dave Balza announced today that Casey Wohlleb has transferred from Marshall University to join the Eagles this fall. A 6-7 swingman, he will have three seasons of eligibility remaining. He becomes the fifth Division I transfer to join the Eagles for the 2005-06 season.
“I feel that Casey is a tremendous late-summer addition to our program who exudes quality both on the court and in the classroom”, said fourth-year head coach Dave Balza. “He is another multi-tooled player, which is what we have targeted in our recruiting this year. His ability to handle the ball, pass, shoot and drive at 6-foot-7 fits nicely with our needs.”
Wohlleb played in 27 games as a reserve in his freshman season with the Thundering Herd, averaging 2.3 points per game and 2.1 rebounds in 10.7 minutes per contest. He shot 37.5% from the field, including 31% from the three-point line, and had a game-high of 10 points. Wohlleb added 13 assists and eight steals on the season.
Prior to attending Marshall, Wohlleb was a standout at both North Broward Prep and Westminster Academy in south Florida, leading Westminster to a state championship as a sophomore to earn Broward County Player of the Year honors. A three-time all-state selection, Wohlleb averaged 22 points, 12 rebounds and six assists per game as a senior at North Broward Prep despite being hampered by an elbow injury that caused him to miss 12 games. He scored 12 points, grabbed five rebounds and handed out three assists in the Broward County vs. Dade County senior all-star game in 2004.
FGCU, which led the nation in rebounding margin a year ago, earned an NCAA Division II tournament bid in its first season of post-season eligibility and finished the year 24-7.
Wohlleb is the seventh and final newcomer to join an FGCU squad that lost eight seniors from a year ago. He joins senior transfers Brandon Dunbar and Leon Woodstock, junior transfer Beau Bauer, sophomore transfers Adam Liddell and Roman Narmbaye, and freshman Carlos Matos in this year’s recruiting class.
