FORT MYERS, Fla., - FGCU men's basketball coach Dave Balza announced the addition of three student athletes today. Kyle Matheny, Chad Lutkenhaus and Harris Gelin all join the team for the 2007-08 season.

“These three young men will help us as we jump into the Atlantic Sun Conference and NCAA Division I,” stated Balza. “Matheny is a good point guard who will fill an immediate need for us. Lutkenhaus is a tremendous shooter who can play either the two-guard or small forward position while Gelin is a good scorer who can create his own shot.”

Matheny transfers in as a sophomore, coming from Miami Dade, CC. He led Miami Dade to a 21-4 record and appearance in the state quarterfinals. He averaged six points per game and five assists. In high school at the Masters Academy, he averaged 25 points per game and six assists during his senior season.

Lutkenhaus scored over 1500 points in his prep career and shot over %51.0 from the three-point line. He pulled down 672 rebounds in his career and was named 1St All-Southwest Florida and 3rd Team All-State during his senior season.

Gelin averaged 17 points per game and was a McDonald’s All-American nominee at Grandview Prep during his senior season. He was also named 2nd team All-County in Palm Beach County and 3rd Team All-State. He helped lead his team to the state semi-finals for the first time in school history.

FGCU is coming off of a 27-6 season in their final year as a Division II independent. The Eagles now step up to Division I and the Atlantic Sun Conference. FGCU returns four starters and four additional letterwinners.
