Wednesday, December 12, 2007

WEST POINT, N.Y. – FGCU dropped its second consecutive road game, falling 66-63 to Army on Thursday night.  The Eagles fall to 3-7 on the year while the Black Knights even their record at 5-5 with the win.

The Eagles got on the board first on a put-back by Adam Liddell (Auburn, Ind.) and increased their early lead to 4-0 on a long duce from Casey Wohlleb (Boca Raton, Fla.).  Army responded with a 12-0 run to take the lead and force an FGCU timeout.  Liddell ended the run and Wohlleb followed with another jumper to make the score 12-8.  Army would maintain the lead, pushing their advantage to 19-12.  The Eagles went on an 8-0 run to take their first lead since early in the game.  Delvin Franklin (Houston, Texas) drained a pair of threes during the run.  From there, the two swapped the lead on several occasions.  FGCU went on a 6-0 run to close the half and take a 32-26 lead into the break.  Franklin was a perfect 4-for-4 from outside and led the Eagles with 12 points in the half.

The Knights scored the first five points of the half, cutting FGCU’s lead to 32-31.  Army was able to even the score five times over the next six minutes, and finally regained the lead at the 11:30 mark at 48-46.  The Black Knights were able to build a 59-48 lead with 7:44 to play in the second half after an 11-0 run.  The Eagles ended the run on a jumper by Wohlleb, cutting the lead back to nine.    FGCU scored the next six points, cutting the lead to 56-59 with just over four minutes to play.  The Eagles were able to cut the lead to 61-59.  Army regained a five point lead on a bucket by Richard Cleveland.  A lay-in by Liddell cut the lead to 65-62 with 1:37 to play.  FGCU missed a pair of short jumpers that would have cut the lead to one with 17 seconds to play.  After Army hit one free-throw, the Eagles grabbed the rebound and Rob Quaintance (Glendale, Az.) was fouled.  He made the first free-throw and intentionally missed the second and grabbed his own rebound before a desperation shot would not fall at the buzzer as Army held on for the three point win.

Marcus Nelson led the Black Knights with 14 points while Josh Miller added 13 on 6-for-8 shooting from the floor.  FGCU held one Jarell Brown, of the top scorers in the nation, to 12 points, the first time in six games he did not reach 20 points.

Franklin scored a career-high 14 in the loss and added four boards.  Liddell added 13 and a season-high nine boards despite spending much of the first half on the bench with foul trouble.  Quaintance added 12 points, six assists, five rebounds and four steals while playing all 40 minutes.

The Eagles conclude their stretch of nine-game’s away from Alico Arena on Monday when they travel to IUPUI in Indianapolis before returning to Alico Arena for a showdown with #18 Butler on December 22 at 7:00 pm.  Tickets still remain for the game, for more information, please call (239) 590-7145 for more details.
