Men's Hoops Falls at Belmont
NASHVILLE, Tenn., - FGCU senior Casey Wohlleb scored his 1000th career point in a losing effort on Saturday night as FGCU fell 86-74 to Belmont in Nashville, Tenn. The Eagles fall to 8-15 overall and 4-5 in the league while Belmont improves to 15-8 and 7-2 in the league.
In the first half, the Eagles took an early 4-0 lead, holding the Bruins to 0-9 from the floor before allowing the hosts to get on the board. Belmont answered with a 6-0 run to take a brief lead, but Landon Adler (Decatur, Ind.) drilled a three to regain the lead for the Eagles. FGCU would build a six point lead on a fast-break lay-up by Casey Wohlleb (Boca Raton, Fla.) at the 7:04 mark.
The lead changed hands nine times and the first half featured six ties including a 32 all deadlock at the intermission. The Eagles held the Bruins to 35.9% from the floor and held the league’s leading three-point shooting team to just 25.0% from behind the arc. FGCU shot 44.4% in the half as Wohlleb led the team with 10 points and five boards while dishing out three assists.
A quick triple by Rob Quaintance (Glendale, Az.) opened up the second half and the Eagles followed with a free-throw to open up a four point lead. With the Eagles leading 38-37 at the first media timeout of the second half, the Bruins went on a 10-0 run to open up a 46-38 lead with 13:54 to play.
A pair of three’s by Delvin Franklin (Houston, Texas) and Quaintance helped trim the lead to 48-46. Belmont again answered with an 8-0 run to take a 57-46 lead. FGCU was able to cut the Belmont lead to single figures on several occasions, but would never regain the lead in the second half. However Belmont was able to knock down 9-of-10 free throws down the stretch and hold on for an 86-74 win.
Justin Hare led four Bruins in double figures with 21 points. Jordan Campbell added 10 points and 10 boards while Andy Wicke and Alex Renfroe added 12 apiece.
Delvin Franklin led all players with a game-high 22 points on 7-for-11 shooting including 5-of-8 from outside. Franklin added seven boards for the Eagles. Casey Wohlleb picked up his 1,000th career point with 19, leaving the transfer from Marshall with 1003 for his career. Rob Quaintance dished out 10 assists and picked up three steals while Terieke Barrowes added eight points and eight boards.
The Eagles will be back in action again on Friday night when they host ETSU at 7:00 pm in Alico Arena.
