Jacksonville Rallies to Knock Off FGCU in Men's Hoops
FORT MYERS, Fla., - Jacksonville shot a season best %60.8 from the floor as they rallied to knock off FGCU 89-80 in Men’s Basketball action on Thursday night. With the win, the Dolphins improve to 16-11 overall and 12-3 in the A-Sun while FGCU falls to 9-20 and 5-10 in the A-Sun.
Four Dolphins scored in double figures, led by Lehmon Colbert’s 21. Marcus Allen and Evan Jefferson added 15 points each, with Brian Gilbert scoring a season-high 14.
Jefferson’s scoring binge came as he broke of a 0-for-12 slump from behind the arc, going 4-of-5 from downtown. Gilbert’s best scoring night came at a critical time for JU, hitting 4-of-5 from behind the arc as well.
JU hit 31-of-51 from the floor (60.8 percent), including a 12-of-19 performance from behind the arc. The 12 treys ties for fourth on the school’s all-time single-game list and the 63.2 percent shooting is tied for the eighth best performance in school history.
Florida Gulf Coast got a game-high 23 points from Delvin Franklin to lead four Eagles in double figures. Casey Wohlleb had 17, with Rob Quaintance scoring 12 points and dishing out 11 assists.
Adam Liddell added 10 points as well for FGCU.
Trailing by one, 50-49, with 17:29 remaining in regulation, the Eagles used a 13-4 run to take a 62-54 with a putback by Adam Liddell capping the run with 12:04 remaining in regulation.
The Dolphins came back to tie the game at 68, with back-to-back trey by Gilbert getting JU back into the game.
Clinging to a one-point lead with 3:10 left, the Dolphins started to drive to the basket. Jefferson got a driving layup and Colbert finished off a 3-point play the old fashioned way to give the Dolphins an 81-75 lead with 1:48 remaining in regulation.
The Dolphins were able to put the game on ice at the free throw line, hitting 6-of-7 at the stripe to seal their 16th win of the season and their seeding at the A-Sun Tournament.
Florida Gulf Coast hit 11 3’s of its own in the game, with Franklin going 5-of-11.
The Dolphins took a 42-40 lead into the locker room at halftime after Franklin hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer that snapped an 8-0 run by JU. Jacksonville had its best shooting half of the season, going 16-of-25 (64 percent), including 7-of-9 from behind the arc.
The Eagles host UNF on Saturday as game two of a double-header to wrap up the home season. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:15
