Monday, August 25, 2008

Casey Wohlleb, a 2008 graduate of FGCU, has signed with Saint Josep Girona in Spain’s LEB Bronze division. Up until this summer, Saint Josep Girona, formerly known as Akasvayu Girona, was a prominent participant in Spain’s ACB division. This summer, however, Girona underwent a massive overhaul acquiring new owners, new management, and a new coaching staff, and will now participate in the LEB Bronze division.

Wohlleb, a 6-7 player known for his versatility on offense, will start at the wing for the club. He begins his pro career in Spain after a tremendous high school and college career. Wohlleb was named the 2004 Broward County High School Player of the Year before beginning his college career at NCAA Division I Marshall of Conference USA. After a productive freshman year, he transferred to Florida Gulf Coast University, then a member of NCAA Division II. After leading Florida Gulf Coast to a pair of dominating seasons at the NCAA Division II level in 2005-06 and 2006-07, Wohlleb emerged as the team’s go-to option during its first year at the NCAA Division I level in 2007-08. He averaged a team-high 16.5 points per game (#5 in the Atlantic Sun Conference) to go along with 3.8 rpg, 1.9 apg, and 1.1 spg on 39.8 FG%, 75.8 FG%, and 34.6 3PT% shooting. In addition to leading Florida Gulf Coast to an impressive 10-win season, Wohlleb delivered remarkable performances against elite competition. Against Butler, then ranked #10 in all of NCAA Division I, Wohlleb netted 24 points, 5 assists, and 4 rebounds. Against Arizona State of the PAC-10 Conference, he totaled 17 points, 4 rebounds, and 4 assists. Against Austin Peay, a NCAA Tournament participant, he had 21 points, 5 assists, and 4 rebounds; and against Belmont, another NCAA Tournament participant, he managed 19 points, 6 rebounds, and 4 assists. Finally against Mercer, who defeated Southern California earlier in the season, he amassed 24 points, 10 rebounds, and 3 assists.

Wohlleb's talent and in particular, his work ethic, made him a highly sought-after prospect for professional teams this offseason. In addition to receiving widespread interest from teams in Spain and other European countries, he also received an offer to join the NBA Development League.

Wohlleb is the fourth AMI client to sign a deal to play in Spain next season, joining Dexter Lyons (CB Illecas - LEB Gold), Jean Francois (Caja Rioja - LEB Silver), and BJ Spencer (Balneario Archena - LEB Bronze).
