Men's Basketball Lands 6-foot-10 Transfer from Ole Miss
FORT MYERS, Fla. – Although the FGCU men’s basketball team is preparing for tonight’s contest against UNF, the Eagles turned their attention to the more distant future today with the signing of Kevin Cantinol for the 2010-11 season.
“Kevin is a terrific young man who fits in well with our program, both on and off the court,” said FGCU head coach Dave Balza.” He will represent our school very well. He brings a physical post presence with size, that’s what we are looking for in this recruiting class. We are excited to have him, and we anticipate that having him workout this semester will not only benefit him, but our team as well.”
Hailing from the Caribbean island of Martinique (Guadeloupe, French West Indies), Cantinol moved to Clearwater for his freshman season in high school. He is the fourth internationally-born signee in Balza’s eight year tenure at FGCU, joining George Erkvania (Tbilisi, Georgia Republic), Mbainai Narmbaye (Chad, Africa) and Juan Cedeno (Maracay, Venezuela).
As a redshirt-freshman at Ole Miss, Cantinol played in 19 games collecting 16 points and 13 rebounds on the season. He set season highs with eight points (on 4-of-4 FGs), four rebounds and 23 minutes in a win at New Orleans. This season as a sophomore, he played in two games.
Cantinol led Calvary Christian High School to its first appearance in the state Final Four in 2007. He also earned All-State and State All-Tournament honors, averaging 16 points, 12 rebounds and four blocked shots as a senior. He holds schools records with 19 blocks in a game, 17 rebounds in a game and most career rebounds. As a junior, he averaged 16 points and seven boards per game in helping the team reach the Regional Finals. His high school resume also includes, listed among the Florida's top 20 players by The Florida Focus, All-Conference selections, three-time team MVP, All-Tournament selection at the Disney Super Showcase and also lettered in track and owns the school record in the shot put.
Due to NCAA Transfer rules, Canitol will be eligible in the spring semester of the 2010-2011 season.
