AT A GLANCE
FGCU will begin its string of four straight road games on Thursday night when it heads to Buies Creek, N.C. to take on Campbell. The Eagles will look to snap a six-game losing streak and pick up their first Atlantic Sun win of the season. Campbell is just two full days removed from a two-game trip to Nashville, Tenn. where it suffered losses to Belmont and Lipscomb.
Campbell has taken three straight meetings from FGCU, sweeping the season series last year. The Blue and Green took the first two meetings with the first coming in 2008 at Carter Gym. Out of the five meetings, just the first two were decided by 10 points or less, as Campbell has out-scored the Eagles by 13.7 points in their three wins.
CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARDS
Just 45 games into his career, sophomore Anthony Banks became FGCU's all-time leader in offensive rebounds with 161 when he grabbed three last game against Mercer. Banks has twice tied the record for most offensive rebounds in a game with nine and owns the single-season record with 100 in 2008-09 as a freshman.
SCOUTING THE CAMELS
Campbell enters Thursday's tilt in sole possession of eight place in the A-Sun standings with a 3-5 record. The Camels 9-8 overall mark is bolstered by a 6-2 record at Gore Arena where both of their losses came by two points each. Campbell picked up wins over SEC foe Auburn and Middle Tennessee earlier in the year and later followed with a five-game win streak. Junior Lorne Merthie, a preseason All-Conference choice, leads the team and ranks 13th in the A-Sun in scoring at 13.0 points per game. Classmate Eric Griffin supplies 11.4 points per contest to go along with his team-high 6.3 rebounds and 2.2 blocks, figures that are 11th and second in the conference, respectively. The Camels get a big spark off the bench from Marvelle Harris, who averages 6.8 points and 5.8 rebounds. Harris also gives Campbell another shot blocker with 32 rejections and has a team-best 42 offensive rebounds. As a team, Campbell leads the A-Sun in field goal percentage (.473) and blocks (5.1).
Redshirt sophomore Anthony Banks has been on a strict offensive rebounding diet, collecting a staggering 61 offensive boards this season, including nine against ACC foe Miami which equaled his career-best. Banks leads the A-Sun in offensive rebounds per game (3.8). He has grabbed five or more offensive rebounds in a game seven times this season and 16 for his career. He ranks 10th in the A-Sun at 6.4 caroms per contest.
LEADER OF THE PACK
Junior Marlon Rivera has taken over the reins of the point guard position and leads the A-Sun in assists per game (27th nationally) at a 5.6 clip. Rivera has led the team in assists 14 times, highlighted by five outings with seven helpers or more. On Dec. 21 in a win over N.C. Central, Rivera dished out 12 assists - the second-most in the program's Division I history and one of three double-digit performances by an A-Sun player this season. FGCU has had a player dish out 100 or more assists in six of the program's first nine seasons.
Freshman Christophe Varidel leads the team and ranks fifth in the Atlantic Sun in three-pointers per game (2.25). Out of Varidel's 44 made field goals on season, 36 have come from beyond the arc. Varidel has made three or more trifectas in a game seve times, including four straight games. Over the last four contests, Varidel is averaging 14.3 points thanks to 15 three-pointers. Varidel is second on the team in scoring in A-Sun contests at 11.1 per game.
TAKE IT TO THE BANKS
The versatility of Anthony Banks is on full display again this season. Banks leads the team in scoring at 14.6 points per game while leading in rebounding (6.4) and offensive rebounds (61). Banks has led the team in scoring seven times, rebounding seven times and both in the same game on six occasions. He's reached double figures in a team-best 14 games while posting a league-best four double-doubles.
