FGCU, Miami to Square Off For Third Straight Year
Friday, May 13, 2011

FORT MYERS, Fla. – For the third straight season, the FGCU men’s basketball team will take on in-state foe Miami when it travels to Coral Gables, Fla. on Nov. 22, as it announced the third game off its 2011-12 schedule on Friday.

The Hurricanes are the second team from the ACC on the Eagles’ upcoming schedule, joining Maryland (Nov. 25). The trip to Maryland will conclude with a contest at Loyola University Maryland, capping a busy Thanksgiving week for the Blue and Green.

A gametime for the Nov. 22 contest at BankUnited Center will be set at a later date.

Miami will be led by newly-appointed head coach Jim Larranaga, who took over the reins of the program on April 22, after 14 successful seasons at George Mason where he led the Patriots to the Final Four in 2006. The Hurricanes return all but one player from their 2010-11 squad that finished 21-15 overall and advanced to the quarterfinals of the NIT.

Since his hiring on March 31, Enfield has signed a trio of players to an NLI to go along with a strong core of returners that accounted for 75 percent of FGCU’s scoring and 69 percent of its rebounding. Highlighting the group is junior-to-be Anthony Banks (Lantana, Fla./Santaluces HS) who was named to the A-Sun All-Conference second team after averaging team-highs of 14.6 points and 6.4 rebounds. Freshman sharp-shooter Christophe Varidel (Versoix, Switzerland/Worcester Academy) finished fifth among first-year players in the nation with 78 three-pointers.

In last year’s meeting at Alico Arena, FGCU fell victim to 13 Miami three-pointers and an 18-of-20 performance at the free throw line in the second half by the visitors during an 87-75 loss. Banks helped the Eagles stay within striking distance late in the second half with game-highs of 21 points and 11 rebounds, including a single-game record nine offensive.
