Men’s Basketball A-Sun Slate Finalized
FORT MYERS, Fla. – The FGCU men’s basketball team’s 18-game Atlantic Sun schedule was unveiled on Monday, finalizing the program’s 29-game regular season slate under first-year head coach Andy Enfield.
With Campbell leaving the A-Sun to join the Big South Conference, the league slate went from 20 games to 18 contests this season. FGCU will play a home-and-home with each of the other nine teams in the A-Sun with games commencing the opening weekend of December.
The Eagles will open A-Sun action at Alico Arena with a pair of games, beginning with a Saturday, Dec. 3rd showdown with ETSU. The Buccaneers finished second in the A-Sun in 2010-11, and advanced to the semifinals of the CollegeInsider.com Tournament (CIT), going 24-12 overall. Gametime is slated for 5:15 p.m. and is the front end of a doubleheader with the women’s program.
FGCU will resume A-Sun play on Monday, Dec. 19 when it welcomes USC Upstate to Southwest Florida. The Eagles swept the Spartans last year, producing a pair of wins with an average margin of victory of 24 points.
A road trip to Georgia to take on Mercer and Kennesaw State will ring in the New Year for the Green and Blue. FGCU will begin the two-game road swing on Monday, Jan. 2, at Mercer followed by a Wednesday evening showdown at Kennesaw State (Jan. 4). Mercer closed last season’s A-Sun regular season by winning six of its last eight contests and advanced to the A-Sun Tournament semifinals.
The Eagles land back at home on Saturday, Jan. 7th to square-off against UNF at 5:15 p.m. in a doubleheader with the women’s program. The Ospreys escaped Fort Myers with a two-point win last February and advanced all the way to the A-Sun Championship. Two days later, FGCU will host Jacksonville on Monday, Jan. 9 at 7:30 p.m. The Dolphins also advanced to the CIT last season, finishing with their second consecutive 20-win campaign.
After playing four of its first six A-Sun games in the friendly confines of Alico Arena, FGCU hits the road for three straight to round out the first run-through of league contests. A two-game trip to Nashville, Tenn. to take on Lipscomb (Jan. 14) and defending A-Sun champ Belmont (Jan. 16) opens the road swing. The Bison finished fourth in last year’s standings, while the Bruins cruised to a 19-1 record in the conference winning both the regular season and A-Sun Tournament.
FGCU will fittingly finish off the first run of A-Sun games with a trip upstate on Friday, Jan. 20 to Stetson. The Eagles and Hatters played one of the longest games in league history last January, as the Green and Blue put together a 111-103 triple-overtime victory in DeLand, Fla. It was the first of two wins for FGCU against Stetson last season.
The second half of the conference slate presents five home games for the Eagles at Alico Arena. FGCU will host Kennesaw State (Jan. 28) and Mercer (Jan. 30) to cap the month of January, while a three-game homestand against Belmont (Feb. 11), Lipscomb (Feb. 13) and Stetson (Feb. 17) concludes the regular season home slate.
FGCU will start the month of February with a two-game trip to Jacksonville to face the Dolphins (Feb. 4) and UNF (Feb. 6). The Eagles will cap the regular season with road contests at USC Upstate (Feb. 23) and ETSU (Feb. 25).
For the third straight year, Mercer will play host to the Atlantic Sun Championship presented by General Shale Brick which runs from February 29 – March 3. For the first time in program history, the Eagles are eligible for postseason play. The top eight teams in the regular season standings advance to the conference tournament.
FGCU also announced it will host Saint Leo on Saturday, Nov. 5 at 8 p.m. in an exhibition contest at Alico Arena. The game will follow the women’s volleyball team’s showdown against BIG EAST member Villanova at 4 p.m.
FGCU season tickets can be purchased in person at the Alico Arena ticket office or by phone at 239-590-7145. The FGCU ticket office is open from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. from Monday through Friday.
Combined season tickets for both the men’s and women’s teams are available again. Season tickets for either the men’s and women’s program range from $84-$259. A combined season ticket (both teams) ranges from $126-$389.
