Thompson Named CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Freshman All-American
FORT MYERS, Fla. – A unanimous Atlantic Sun All-Freshmen team choice, FGCU men’s basketball guard Bernard Thompson (Conyers, Ga./Rockdale County HS) earned some more postseason accolades on Tuesday when he was named to the CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Freshmen All-American team.
Thompson was one of two A-Sun rookies to make the 25-member Mid-Major Freshmen All-American squad, as he was joined by USC Upstate’s Ty Greene. Thompson and Green were the only two freshmen to win A-Sun Newcomer of the Week twice this season.
A native of Conyers, Ga., Thompson finished second on the team in scoring (11.5), rebounding (5.2) and assists (2.1) per game, leading all A-Sun freshmen in the first two categories. Thompson scored in double figures in a team-high 22 games, finishing as the squad’s leading scorer 10 times, top rebounder in 11 games, and both in the same game on four occasions. His 22 double figure outings were highlighted by a season-high 22 points in front of family and friends at Kennesaw State and 20 at USC Upstate.
Thompson not only used his long 6-foot-3 frame on the offensive end, but also finished third in the A-Sun in steals per game (1.9). His 57 steals were the fifth-best total in program single-season history, as the lengthy Georgia product picked up a theft in 28 contests. A multi-faceted offensive threat, Thompson shot 44 percent from the field and knocked down 38 percent (36-95) from beyond the arc to rank 10th in the A-Sun.
FGCU finished its first season under head coach Andy Enfield with a program Division I record 15 wins and made a magical run through the A-Sun Tournament that featured an appearance in the championship game on ESPN2. The sixth-seeded Eagles became just the sixth team in the 33-year history of the A-Sun Tournament to advance to the championship in their first conference postseason berth, defeating third-seeded USC Upstate in the quarterfinals and second-seeded host Mercer in the semifinals.
