@FGCU_MBB Ranked No. 25 in Final USA Today/Coaches Poll
DUNK CITY, Fla. – After becoming the first No. 15 seed in NCAA Tournament history to advance to the Sweet Sixteen, FGCU earned its first national ranking in program history on Tuesday when it came in at No. 25 in the final USA Today/Coaches Poll.
FGCU defeated both Miami (No. 10) and Georgetown (No. 17), who also finished in the top 25, during its 26-11 season that also featured games against Duke (No. 5), Florida (No. 9) and VCU (No. 23). The Eagles are the first Atlantic Sun team to finish the season in the top 25 since College of Charleston did so in 1997.
The Eagles used a 13-5 A-Sun record in the regular season to earn the No. 2 seed in the conference postseason tournament. FGCU posted three consecutive double-digit wins en route to the A-Sun title and the league’s automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament in just its second year of postseason eligibility, culminating with an 88-75 victory over No. 1 seed and tournament host Mercer in the championship.
Just appearing in its first NCAA Tournament wasn’t good enough for FGCU, as it became the first No. 15 seed in NCAA history to advance to the Sweet 16 and the first team since the 1987 Florida squad to win its first two tournament games. The Eagles opened with a second round win over No. 2 seed Georgetown and followed with a win over No. 7 seed San Diego State in the third round to earn a trip to Dallas Cowboys Stadium for the South Region semifinals.
FGCU capped its season with a program D1 record 26 wins (26-11), winning 14 of its last 17 games. The 26 wins were the second-most in the program’s 11-year history, falling just one win away from the record of 27 set in 2006-07, the final season in Division II.
The Green and Blue will hold their annual postseason banquet on Monday, April 15 in Alico Arena. The banquet, which is open to the public, will begin at 6 p.m. with a reception followed by dinner at 6:30 p.m. with an autograph session immediately following the event.
