DUNK CITY, Fla. – During the WGCU’s “DunkCity-We Are FGCU” screening event, Brian Hamman from CenturyLink presented FGCU men’s basketball head coach Joe Dooley with a check representing their recent $6,710 donation to FGCU Athletics collected during the “CenturyLink gives FGCU a High 5!” promotion. For each new subscriber between March 26th and the end of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament, CenturyLink donated $5 to Eagles Athletics.

“We are extremely grateful for Brian Hamman and CenturyLink’s valued support, as we look to continue to generate much needed additional resources for our basketball programs, as well as our other 14 Eagles sports,” said FGCU Director of Athletics Ken Kavanagh. “In turn, this partnership is a great example of how our Green and Blue community can team with our much appreciated corporate sponsors, as we look to continue to help produce national exposure for our University and all of Southwest Florida.”

One magical March week, Fort Myers sky-rocketed into the national spotlight as FGCU made a historic run to the NCAA’s Sweet 16. A crowd of 350 fans showed up for the screening on Wednesday with the team sticking around to sign autographs afterwards.

On the men’s side, FGCU won 14 of its last 17 games to finish with a program Division I record 26 wins (26-11). The Eagles used a 13-5 A-Sun record in the regular season to earn the No. 2 seed in the conference postseason tournament before posting three consecutive double-digit wins en route to the A-Sun title and automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament in just its second year of postseason eligibility. FGCU became the first No. 15 seed in NCAA Tournament history to advance to the Sweet 16 and the first team since the 1987 Florida squad to win its first two tournament games. The Eagles opened with a second round win over No. 2 seed Georgetown and followed with a win over No. 7 seed San Diego State in the third round to earn a trip to Dallas Cowboys Stadium for the South Region semifinals.
