WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - Sophomore Adam Liddell recorded his first double-double to lead Florida Gulf Coast University to a 69-60 win over Palm Beach Atlantic University in Division II men's basketball Thursday night.
Liddell (Auburn, Ind.) came off the bench to score a career-high 18 points on 7-of-9 from the field and 4-of-6 from the free throw line. He added 10 rebounds and a blocked shot as the Eagles (11-11) snapped a four-game losing streak and ended a five-game road trip, their longest of the season.
Junior guard Beau Bauer (Walton, Ind.) added 14 points off the bench for FGCU while sophomore Casey Wohlleb (Boca Raton, Fla.) and freshman Cecil Avant (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) had eight points each.
The Eagles trailed 25-23 with 3:42 to play in the opening half before an 8-3 run, keyed by a pair of Liddell buckets, gave them a slim 31-28 haltime lead.
FGCU had its largest lead, 49-38, after a Liddell dunk with 11:48 to play in the second half. But PBA held FGCU to just one field goal in the final five minutes, pulling within two points, 62-60, with 1:11 to play. But sophomore Yavney Neptune (Port Charlotte, Fla.) broke the drought with a lay-up and the Eagles hit 5-of-6 from the line in the final 30 seconds for the win.
FGCU shot 42.1% from the floor, including four 3-pointers, and hit 17-of-24 (70.1%) from the line. PBA was held to 35.4% from the field and just 26% from beyond the 3-point line. FGCU recorded a season-high five blocked shots.
Sean Tucker had a team-high 17 points for the Sailfish (4-20) while Derek Barnes and Fitzroy Anthony had 10 points apiece.
FGCU returns to action Monday night when it hosts Kentucky State at 7:30 p.m.
