FORT MYERS, Fla. – Marlon Rivera, a 6-2 guard from Santa Fe College in Gainesville, Fla., became the newest member of the FGCU men's basketball program, head coach Dave Balza announced.
“We are very happy that Marlon has chosen to continue his college career at FGCU,” said Balza. “Marlon is a power guard who brings a lot of toughness to our program. He comes from an excellent junior college program. He has great court vision and will be a good floor leader for us.”
Rivera, who finished third in the Mid-Florida Conference Player of the Year voting, joins Chase Fieler and Kevin Cantinol as newcomers to the Eagle program for the 2010-11 season.
Rivera, a First Team All-MFC (2010) and Second Team All-MFC honoree (2009) at Santa Fe CC, averaged 7.5 points and a team-high 5.3 assists per game as a sophomore and 8.3 points, 6.1 assists, and 4.4 boards as a freshman. The Kissimmee, Fla. native also averaged nearly 2.0 steals and 3.1 rebounds per contest for the Saints last season. Rivera also led the team in assists and finished ranked 17th in the nation, while also earning the team’s best defender award in consecutive seasons.
“This situation is a dream come true for me,” said Rivera. “I’m extremely happy for this opportunity because as a kid, I was always anxious to sign with a Division I program. FGCU is a good school with good coaches and I look forward to getting on the floor with my teammates to help bring success to the program.”
