Eagles take on Arkansas on Nov. 22
FORT MYERS, Fla. – The FGCU men’s basketball team released three more games from its 2010-11 non-conference schedule on Thursday, announcing it will play in the Razorback Showcase.
The Eagles will host Southeast Missouri State on Tuesday, November 16 at 7:05 p.m. before heading to Louisiana to take on Grambling on Saturday, November 20. FGCU will conclude the three-game showcase at Arkansas against the host Razorbacks on Monday, Nov. 22.
“We are excited to be a part of the 2010 Razorback Showcase,” said head coach Dave Balza. “The three games will serve as a strong early test for our team and as great preparation for our conference season.”
The remainder of the men’s basketball schedule is expected to be released by September 1.
FGCU’s trip to Arkansas gives it four games against BCS foes during the non-conference schedule. The Eagles will also host ACC opponent Miami (Nov. 27) and travel to Big Ten members Indiana (Nov. 12) and Ohio State (Dec. 15). The four games against BCS opponents are the most in a single-season since the program’s inaugural Division I campaign in 2007-08.
The Razorbacks return nine players from the 2009-10 team that went 14-18 overall and 7-9 in the ultra-competitive SEC. Arkansas welcomes back junior sharp-shooter Rotnei Clark and freshman All-American Marshawn Powell, who ranked second and third on the team in scoring at 15.1 and 14.9 points per game, respectively. Clark ranked ninth in the country in three-point field goals made per game (3.2) and three-point percentage (.427) in 2009-10. Led by head coach John Pelphrey, the Razorbacks went 12-9 at Bud Walton Arena last year, including 5-3 in the SEC.
FGCU’s game at Arkansas will mark the second time in program history it has taken on an SEC foe. The last came on Dec. 10, 2008 when the Eagles took on Florida in Gainesville.
After heading to Bloomington, Ind. to take on the Hoosiers in the season opener, the Eagles return to the friendly confines of Alico Arena for their home opener against Southeast Missouri on Nov. 16. A member of the Ohio Valley Conference, the Redhawks return three starters off of last year’s team that went 7-23.
The second game of the showcase for the Eagles sends them to Grambling to take on the Tigers and first-year head coach Bobby Washington. As the interim coach last season, Washington led Grambling to the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Tournament for the first time in two years, where they defeated top-seeded and SWAC regular season champ Jackson State in the opening round.
The 2010-11 version of the Eagles welcome back nine players, including their top two leading scorers from last season in redshirt sophomore Anthony Banks (12.9 ppg) and senior Reed Baker (11.4 ppg). The Blue and Green’s eight-player incoming class was recently tabbed the second-best recruiting class in the Atlantic Sun Conference by Hoop Scoop.
Single-game and season tickets are now on sale and can be purchased through the FGCU Ticket Office in Alico Arena either in person or by phone at (239) 590-7145. Tickets are also available on www.FGCUathletics.com/tickets.
