Eagles predicted to finish 9th and 10th in preseason conference polls

FORT MYERS, Fla. – FGCU men’s basketball redshirt sophomore Anthony Banks (Lantana, Fla./Santaluces HS) was named to the preseason Atlantic Sun All-Conference team on Wednesday afternoon, in a vote conducted by the league head coaches.

Along with the All-Conference teams, the league unveiled its preseason Coaches’ and Media Polls in which the Eagles were selected 10th and 9th, respectively. Defending A-Sun regular season co-champ Lipscomb was picked as the preseason favorite in both polls. Led by preseason Player of the Year Adnan Hodzic, Lipscomb was also tabbed to win the league’s postseason tournament by both the coaches and media.

Banks is the first player in program history to earn preseason accolades from A-Sun since FGCU joined the conference in 2007-08. Banks is one of just three underclassmen on the 12-man All-Conference team.

“This is a tremendous and well-deserved honor for Anthony,” said head coach Dave Balza. “He (Banks) had a terrific freshman season and worked extremely hard to return from injury. Unfortunately, he’ll have to do the same this season, but I know he’ll be back and we expect big things from him again in 2010-11.”

An A-Sun All-Rookie team selection a year ago, Banks led the Eagles in both scoring (12.9) and rebounding (6.6) in 2009-10, figures that ranked 11th and eighth in the A-Sun, respectively. Banks finished in double figures 21 times, including a team-best four 20-point efforts. A native of Lantana, Fla., Banks ranked third in the A-Sun in field goal percentage (.567) and turned in five double-doubles. He led the team in scoring 11 times, rebounding on 14 occasions and both in the same game four times.

This past summer, Banks underwent successful surgery to repair a fractured bone in his right foot. Banks suffered a fracture in the fifth metatarsal of his right foot while playing over the summer and it’s the same injury that he suffered in 2008-09, but on the opposite foot.

FGCU will take the court for its first official practice this Friday, Oct. 15 following the women’s volleyball game against Kennesaw State that begins at 6 p.m. Friday marks the first official day of practice for Division I men’s basketball.
