FORT MYERS, Fla. – After dishing out 20 assists during a two-game week for the Eagles, FGCU men’s basketball junior Marlon Rivera (Rio Piedras, Puerto Rico/Sagemont HS/Santa Fe CC) was named the Atlantic Sun Conference Newcomer of the week on Tuesday.
Over a 1-1 week for FGCU, Rivera averaged 7.0 points, 6.5 rebounds, 10.0 assists and 2.5 steals per game. Rivera is the just the fourth player in program history to earn a weekly honor from the A-Sun and the first to receive the Newcomer of the Week accolade. The weekly award was added this season.
In the team’s 87-68 win over N.C. Central (Dec. 21), Rivera led the team with seven rebounds, but also had a season-best 12 assists. Rivera’s 12 assists are tied for the most by an A-Sun player this season and the second-most by an Eagle since FGCU joined the Division I ranks in 2007-08. Rivera then followed with 11 points, six boards and a game-high eight assists against IUPUI on Monday night.
For the year, Rivera ranks second in the A-Sun in assists at 5.7 per contest and third in steals with 2.0 per game – both of which are team-highs. Rivera also ranks sixth in the conference with a positive 1.44 assist/turnover ratio and sixth in rebounding (5.9), adding to his 6.7 points per game.
Rivera has been strong on both ends of the court this season with five straight games of at least five rebounds and five assists. The Rio Piedras, Puerto Rico native has led the team in assists nine times, rebounding on five occasions and both in the same game four times. Rivera has 32 of FGCU’s 65 assists over the last four contests.
FGCU (3-8, 0-2) will continue its four-game homestand when it hosts Atlantic Sun foe Belmont (9-3, 2-0) on Monday, January 3. Tip time for the Eagles’ A-Sun home opener is slated for 7:30 p.m. and is the back end of a doubleheader with the women’s team that will begin at 5:15 p.m.
