FORT MYERS, Fla. – FGCU men’s basketball freshman Christophe Varidel (Versoix, Switzerland/Worcester Academy) averaged over 20 points during three games this past week, highlighted by a season-high 29 points during a triple-overtime win at Stetson, and for his performance was named the Atlantic Sun Conference Newcomer of the Week on Tuesday afternoon.
Varidel joins teammate Marlon Rivera (Rio Piedras, Puerto Rico/Sagemont HS/Santa Fe CC) as the only two Eagles to earn a weekly accolade this season from the A-Sun.
The 29-point performance last Tuesday at Stetson helped the Eagles outlast the Hatters, 111-103, in the longest game in program history. Varidel’s 29 points equaled the most by an FGCU player this season, while the team’s 111 points were a program Division I record and the third-best total in the nine-year history. Over his 44 minutes in the win, Varidel knocked down 7-of-15 from the field, including a season-high six three-pointers, and went a perfect 9-of-9 from the free throw line.
Varidel followed his big outing at Stetson with team-highs of 15 points against Belmont and 18 points against Lipscomb during a weekend road trip through Nashville. The Versoix, Switzerland product averaged 20.7 points over the three games and his 12 three-pointers during the week were the tied for the second-most in the nation.
Thanks to his recent stretch of eight consecutive games in double figures, Varidel is averaging 10.9 points per contest. Over the eight-game stretch, Varidel is averaging 16.9 points and has led the team in scoring six times. He ranks third in the A-Sun in three-pointers per game (2.55) and is seventh in three-point field goal percentage (.386).
