AT A GLANCE
FGCU takes the floor for part two of its three-game road swing when stays in the state of Georgia to take on Atlantic Sun foe Mercer. The Eagles, who are coming off a last second defeat at Kennesaw State on Thursday, will look to avenge a narrow three-point loss to the Bears earlier in the season. On the flip side, Mercer has won six of its last eight games to climb into fifth place in the conference standings.
FGCU picked up its first win over Mercer last season at Alico Arena, coming away with a one-point victory, 71-70, on an Anthony Banks layup with three seconds remaining. Since then, the Bears have won two straight and coupled with their four consecutive wins to start their series, they own a 6-1 lead over the Eagles. Mercer has taken all three meetings at the University Center, which is also the home of the A-Sun Tournament. Banks averaged 15.7 point and 7.7 rebounds in three career games against Mercer.
The second half of the season has been a youth movement for the Eagles, as underclassmen have led the team in scoring the last 10 games and 12 of out the last 13. Freshman Christophe Varidel has been the catalyst, hitting for double figures in 11 consecutive games to average 16.6 points along the way. Varidel has led the team in scoring seven times over the 11 games, while hitting 38 three-pointers. Banks has reached double figures in 10 straight - the second longest streak of his career.
