Thompson Named College Sports Madness A-Sun Player of the Week

FORT MYERS, Fla. – FGCU freshman guard Bernard Thompson (Conyers, Ga./Rockdale County HS) was named the Atlantic Sun Player of the Week by College Sports Madness on Monday, just hours prior to the Eagles conference showdown at Mercer.

College Sports Madness identifies the highest impact players nationally and one from each conference in their weekly feature. The site’s coverage also includes a Top 25 ranking, tournament bracketology and team pages for each conference and school.

Thompson was one of five FGCU players in double figures during the team’s 84-72 win over Maine prior to the start of the New Year. The Conyers, Ga. product reached double-digits for a team-best ninth time, pouring in 15 points to go with a season-high nine rebounds as the Eagles finished off 2011 on a two-game win streak.

With nine starts in 12 games to his credit, Thompson leads all A-Sun freshmen in scoring at 11.7 points per game, ranking 11th overall. The 6-foot-3 guard has used his long frame to come up with 23 steals, good for a 1.9 per game average that is second in the A-Sun. Thompson is also adding 4.8 rebounds and 2.2 assists per game while shooting 43 percent from the floor.
