FORT MYERS, Fla. – FGCU men’s basketball junior Sherwood Brown (Orlando, Fla./Olympia HS) was named the Atlantic Sun Player of the Week by College Sports Madness on Monday night before the Eagles took on Belmont.
During the weekly time frame for the award, Brown averaged team-highs of 15.5 points and 7.0 rebounds in FGCU’s two victories against Jacksonville and at Lipscomb. Brown joins freshman Bernard Thompson (Conyers, Ga./Rockdale County HS) as weekly winners by the website.
College Sports Madness identifies the highest impact players nationally and one from each conference in their weekly feature. The site’s coverage also includes a Top 25 ranking, tournament bracketology and team pages for each conference and school.
In his second game back after missing four contests, Brown provided a major spark off the bench in a physical showdown against Jacksonville. The Orlando, Fla. product went for 15 points and six rebounds in just 18 minutes of work, hitting all five shots from the field, including a pair of threes. Brown then helped FGCU overcome a 13-point second half deficit in Nashville, again coming off the bench for 16 points and eight rebounds as the Eagles topped the Bison, 84-80, in overtime.
<>p> Brown has reached double figures in eight of 14 games played, ranking second on the team and 13th in the A-Sun in scoring at 11.6 per contest. He leads the team in rebounding (5.3), field goal percentage (.517) and is second in offensive rebounds (29).
FGCU put an end to a three-game road swing on Friday when it takes on in-state and conference rival Stetson at 7 p.m. The game will be televised on Comcast Sports South (CSS).
