FORT MYERS, Fla. – Highlighted by his MVP honors at the Battle 4 Atlantis hosted by FGCU, men’s basketball senior Sherwood Brown (Orlando, Fla./Olympia HS) turned in another strong week for the Eagles to earn his second straight A-Sun Player of the Week award from College Sports Madness on Monday.
Brown helped lead the Eagles to an automatic invitation into the 2016 Battle 4 Atlantis in the Bahamas by pouring in a team-high 22 points, including 17 in the second half, in the championship game against Toledo in which the Green and Blue erased a 10-point halftime deficit.
Over the three-game week, Brown averaged 14.7 points, 4.3 rebounds and 2.7 steals in 33.0 minutes per game. An A-Sun Preseason All-Conference selection by the league head coaches, College Sports Madness and Lindy’s Sports, Brown opened his week with seven points, seven rebounds and four steals in the Battle 4 Atlantis opening round win against Alcorn State. At St. John’s on Saturday, he went for 15 points, five rebounds and three steals.
Brown is off to a solid start in his final campaign with the Green and Blue, reaching double figures a team-best six times, while ranking second on the club, and ninth in the A-Sun, in scoring at 14.4 points. His 1.7 steals per contest are tied for sixth-best in the league, while he’s also in the top 20 in rebounding (4.9).
College Sports Madness identifies the highest impact players nationally and one from each conference in their weekly feature. The site’s coverage also includes a Top 25 ranking, tournament bracketology and team pages for each conference and school.
Currently No. 73 in the RealTime RPI with the 32nd-best strength of schedule, FGCU is off to a 4-3 start with wins over ACC foe Miami and Toledo, who was favored to win the MAC’s West Division by the league’s media. The Eagles are back in action on Wednesday, November 28 at Samford with tip set for 8:00 P.M. ET.
