Brown Named Atlantic Sun Conference Player of the Week
FORT MYERS, Fla. – FGCU men’s basketball senior Sherwood Brown (Orlando, Fla./Olympia HS) collected his second major award of the week as he was named the Atlantic Sun Conference Player of the Week on Tuesday afternoon.
Brown also took home the College Sports Madness A-Sun Player of the Week honors on Monday. It marks the second time in Brown’s career that he has won the A-Sun Player of the Week award with the other occurrence happening on January 31, 2011.
With fellow Eagle Bernard Thompson (Conyers, Ga./Rockdale County HS) taking home the A-Sun Player of the Week honor last week, Brown and Thompson become the first pair of teammates to win the award in back-to-back weeks since ETSU’s Adam Sollazzo and Mike Smith accomplished the feat on Jan. 4, 2011 and Jan. 11, 2011.
Brown helped lead the Eagles to an automatic invitation into the 2016 Battle 4 Atlantis in the Bahamas by pouring in a team-high 22 points, including 17 in the second half, in the championship game against Toledo in which the Green and Blue erased a 10-point halftime deficit.
Over the three-game week, Brown averaged 14.7 points, 4.3 rebounds and 2.7 steals in 33.0 minutes per game. An A-Sun Preseason All-Conference selection by the league head coaches, College Sports Madness and Lindy’s Sports, Brown opened his week with seven points, seven rebounds and four steals in the Battle 4 Atlantis opening round win against Alcorn State. At St. John’s on Saturday, he went for 15 points, five rebounds and three steals.
Brown is off to a solid start in his final campaign with the Green and Blue, reaching double figures a team-best six times, while ranking second on the club, and ninth in the A-Sun, in scoring at 14.4 points. His 1.7 steals per contest are tied for sixth-best in the league, while he’s also in the top 20 in rebounding (4.9).
Currently No. 73 in the RealTime RPI with the 37th-best strength of schedule, FGCU is off to a 4-3 start with wins over ACC foe Miami and Toledo, who was favored to win the MAC’s West Division by the league’s media. The Eagles are back in action on Wednesday, November 28 at Samford with tip set for 8:00 P.M. ET.
