DUNK CITY, Fla. – When the week began, the defending Atlantic Sun Conference Champion FGCU men’s basketball team was set to make five TV appearances. Now, at the end of the week, fans of #DunkCity will have an opportunity to watch the Eagles’ high-flying attack on television 10 times in 2013-14.
The most recent additions to the TV lineup for the upcoming campaign include FGCU’s game at Furman on Nov. 15 (CSS, 6 p.m.), at FIU on Dec. 7 (FOX Sports 1, 4 p.m.) and at Mississippi State on Dec. 19 (CSS, 9 p.m.) The Eagles’ game at FIU was previously set for a 5 p.m. start, but has moved up an hour to accommodate the TV broadcast. Similarly, the Green and Blue’s contest against Mississippi State has been pushed back an hour from its original 8 p.m. Eastern start.
Earlier in the week on Tuesday, FGCU and the A-Sun announced that both of the Eagles’ conference matches with Stetson would be carried on CSS as well. Of FGCU’s 10 TV games this year (with the possibility that more are still added), four will be shown on Comcast Sports Southeast (CSS).
Furthermore, of those 10 games, half will be shown on national TV: Nov. 8 at Nebraska (Big Ten Network, 9 p.m.), Nov. 12 at home versus Hartford (ESPN2, 7 a.m.), Dec. 7 at FIU (FOX Sports 1, 4 p.m.), Dec. 17 at USF (ESPNU, 7 p.m.) and Feb. 21 in Alico Arena against Mercer (ESPNU, 6 p.m.). FGCU’s other TV appearance will be at home on Jan. 18 opposite ETSU at 7:30 p.m. on WINK (local CBS affiliate).
The game versus Hartford has been dubbed “Breakfast at the Beach,” which is FGCU’s home opener, part of ESPN’s 24-Hour Tipoff Marathon and will serve as the Sweet 16 banner unveiling. Tickets are selling quickly and can be reserved by visiting the Alico Arena Ticket Office, calling 239-590-7145 or logging on to FGCUAthletics.com/Tickets.
In addition to tickets for that game selling quickly, season-ticket sales are at record levels and have more than doubled from a year ago. Additional Priority 2 reserved seats in Alico have been created to meet the growing demand. In turn, a limited number are still available for the season; Club Level is sold out, while mid court Priority 1 are nearly gone and remaining Priority 2 options are disappearing quickly.
Furthermore, general admission single-game tickets and new mini-plan packages for the year are currently on sale. With the exception “Breakfast at the Beach,” all men’s games have been packaged into four tiers to provided added options and savings for fans, in addition to single-game purchases. Fans will have one of their first looks at the program which became the first to advance to the Sweet 16 as a No. 15 seed on Friday, Oct. 18, at Dunk City After Dark Presented by Coconut Point Ford. The Midnight Madness event is scheduled to begin at 9 p.m. following the FGCU volleyball team’s game at home against Lipscomb. Portions of the event will be shown nationally on ESPNU as the Eagles will be showcased alongside eight of the premier programs in the country: Duke, Kentucky, Syracuse, UConn, Memphis, Oklahoma State, New Mexico and Wichita State.
FGCU went 26-11 last year, knocked off eventual ACC Champion Miami and earned an ESPY for “Best Upset.” Junior Brett Comer (Winter Park, Fla./Winter Park HS) has been named by Bleacher Report as one of the Top-10 Most Exciting Players for the 2013-14 season, while senior Chase Fieler (Parkersburg, W. Va./Parkersburg South HS) has been tabbed as one of the Top-20 Mid-Major Stars for the upcoming year by the same outlet. Junior Bernard Thompson (Conyers, Ga./Rockdale County HS) is also the defending A-Sun Defensive Player of the Year after finishing second in the nation in total steals (102).
