MACON, Ga. – Following a Division-I program record 30-point performance on Tuesday and just missing his third career double-double by a rebound on Friday, FGCU senior Chase Fieler has been named the Atlantic Sun Men’s Basketball Player of the Week by league officials Monday.
Fieler (Parkersburg, W. Va./Parkersburg South HS) scored a career-high 30 points while also setting a D-I program record of 13 made field goals on only 17 attempts in a 65-51 win over Hartford on Tuesday morning in front of a national TV audience on ESPN2. FGCU’s lone senior then followed that performance up with a 10-point, 9-rebound outing at Furman on Friday night, helping lead the Eagles back from a nine-point deficit with six minutes to play and to a 70-69 victory.
For the week, Fieler averaged 20 points and 8 rebounds, while shooting 68 percent (17-25) from the floor in claiming his first career Player of the Week honor.
Against the Hawks as part of ESPN’s 24-Hour Tipoff Marathon, Fieler scored 20 points in the second half and also grabbed seven boards. Versus the Paladins Friday, the 6-8 forward got into early foul trouble and played just five minutes in the first half. However, he logged all 20 minutes in the second half, scoring eight of his 10 points and rejecting two shots.
Fieler and his teammates return to action Monday night against Eckerd as the Eagles host the Tritons at Alico Arena. The game will be streamed for free on ASun.TV, not ESPN3 as previously announced, with David Moulton on the call and J. Webb Horton serving as the color analyst. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. as FGCU begins a mini two-game homestand.
