MACON, Ga. – Following a pair of back-to-back double-double performances which led FGCU back to the top of the league standings, redshirt junior Jamail Jones has been named the Atlantic Sun Men’s Basketball Newcomer of the Week.

Jones (Atlanta, Ga./Montverde Academy) secured his first double-double with 11 points and a career-high 13 rebounds on Friday night in front of a national TV audience against Mercer, moving FGCU into a first-place tie with the Bears. He followed that performance up with a career-best 22 points to go along with 12 boards in a victory over Kennesaw State on Sunday. The Marquette transfer added a career-high-tying four assists versus the Owls as the Eagles won their 28th game in the last 30 tries at Alico Arena.

For the weekend, Jones averaged 16.5 points and 12.5 rebounds per game en route to his first career A-Sun weekly honor. He has now scored in double figures four straight games for the first time in his career, moving his scoring average from 7.3 before the four-game stretch to its current level of 8.3. The 6-6 combo wing has also improved his rebound average from 5.0 four games ago to now 5.5, the second-best mark on the FGCU roster.

The two big performances moved the Green and Blue within one win of their second straight 20-win season as they now sit at 19-10 on the year and 13-3 in A-Sun action. FGCU and Mercer remain tied atop the league ledger with two regular-season games remaining. If both teams finish with the same record, the first tiebreaker (since they split the season series) will be record against the third-place team, which will be either USC Upstate or ETSU. Both teams are currently tied for third at 10-7 and will face each other on Upstate’s home court Friday night. If FGCU and Mercer finish with the same record and Upstate defeats ETSU, the Eagles will clinch the No. 1 seed and have home-court advantage throughout the A-Sun Tournament. If the same scenario plays out but ETSU defeats Upstate, Mercer will earn the No. 1 seed.

The Eagles have guaranteed themselves the right to host a quarterfinal tournament game on Tuesday, Mar. 4, at 7 p.m. on ESPN3. With a win, the Green and Blue would also host a semifinal matchup on Thursday, Mar. 6, at either 6:30 or 8:30 p.m. on CSS. The championship game will be held at the highest remaining seed on Sunday, Mar. 9, on ESPN2 at 2 p.m.

Current and future season-ticket holders, in addition to FGCU students, can now secure their tickets for all those games by visiting the Alico Arena Ticket Office or by calling 239-590-7145. Student tickets are free, courtesy of FGCU picking up the $5 charge. All other prices vary, and ticket information can be found by visiting the link at the top right of this release. Any remaining tickets will go on sale to the general public starting Saturday, Mar. 1.
