FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Florida Gulf Coast University men’s cross country team looks to build on last week’s success when it competes in the seven-team Florida Tech Cross Country Invitational at Wickham Park in Melbourne, Fla. at 8 a.m. on Saturday.

The Eagles, who had their highest finish ever with a third-place finish at last Friday’s rain-affected Saint Leo Invitational, will compete in an 8K race this weekend. Last weekend’s race was shortened to 5-K because of severe weather and course conditions. FGCU will run against Webber International, Palm Beach Atlantic, Nova Southeastern, Rollins, Embry-Riddle and Florida Tech.

This is the third time in four seasons the Eagles have competed in this event. Last year’s race was cancelled due to the affects of Hurricane Frances. FGCU has not placed higher than fourth in this meet and has only had one runner finish in the top-25.

Last week five runners cracked the top-25 for the Eagles. Sophomore Mike Harney (North Fort Myers, Fla.), who posted the second-fastest 5-K time (17:08) in school history, led the first two miles of the race before finishing third. Juniors Scott Poindexter (Tallahassee, Fla.) and Ismael Galicia (Naples, Fla.) also posted sub-18 minutes times a week ago. Freshman Grant Berkery (Sarasota, Fla.) and sophomore Bryan Spiewak (Coral Springs, Fla.) rounded out the top five at Saint Leo.

Following this weekend's invitational, the Eagles have a week off before returning to the trails for the Embry-Riddle Invitational in Daytona Beach on September 24
