Harney and Poindexter lead Men's Cross Country at Florida Tech

FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Florida Gulf Coast University men’s cross country team ran sixth in the seven-team Florida Tech Invitational at Wickham Park in Melbourne, Fla. Saturday morning. Embry-Riddle finished with 39 points, easily outdistancing Nova Southeastern (65) and Florida Tech (75). FGCU finished with 127 points.

The top runner was Austin Richmond of Webber with a time of 26:07.4, 45 seconds faster than Jack McAfee of Embry-Riddle (26:51.9). Embry-Riddle’s Chris Henry followed his teammate to take third place with a time of 27:06.9.

Sophomore Mike Harney captured 11th place to lead the Eagles. Harney completed the 8K course in 28:00 minutes, the second fastest 8-K time all-time at FGCU. Junior Scott Poindexter was the only other FGCU runner to crack the top-20 with a 18th place finish in 28:24, the third fastest 8K time in school history.

Junior Ismael Galicia was third for FGCU in 26th (29:08), freshman Grant Berkery finished 37th and sophomore Bryan Spiewak was 42nd (31:28).

Seven full teams completed in the event, including Webber International, Palm Beach Atlantic, Nova Southeastern, Rollins, Embry-Riddle and Florida Tech, along with a number of unattached runners.

FGCU has a week off before returning to the trails for the Embry-Riddle Invitational in Daytona Beach on September 24.
