Men's Cross Country Finishes 16th at South Region Championships
DADE CITY, Fla. – The Florida Gulf Coast University men's cross country team finished 16th at the NCAA Division II South Region meet at Little Everglades Ranch in Dade City on Saturday.
Sophomore Mike Harney led the Eagles with a school-best regional finish of 31st. Former Eagles standout Edison Vasquez placed 77th a year ago. Harney covered the 10,000-meter course in 36:33. Junior Scott Poindexter was 46th (37:27), and junior Ismael Galicia was 65th (38:33).
Freshman Grant Berkery (41:23) placed 98th, while sophomore Bryan Spiewak (43:24) was 107th to complete the FGCU scoring. Also competing was freshman Adam Ulrich (43:49) in 109th and junior Ray Cayo (44:32) in 111th.
Harding claimed the top four places and finished with 32 points, led by meet winner James Cheruiyot, who covered the 10,000-meter course in 32:44. Florida Southern was second, followed by Clayton College and State University. Joining the top three teams in the Division II Championship meet on Nov. 19 in Chino, California were individual qualifiers Michael Padilla of West Florida and Stephen Hill of Christian Brothers.
This was the first-ever trip to the regional championship meet for FGCU.
