Cross Country Has Record-Setting Day at FSU Invitational
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The FGCU Cross Country runners set numerous records on Saturday, including 13 personal records, two lifetime bests, and nearly setting a new school record. Overall, the men placed seventh of the eleven participating teams, while the women took tenth out of thirteen teams.
Of all of the records set by the runners, Kyle Brunette was the most impressive. Finishing in a time of 26:54.07 (22nd place), Kyle was just four seconds away from setting a new school record in an 8K race. Alexander Stoermer finished in 35th place with a time of 27:24.85, while Joshua Brooks, Tyler Boban, and Richard Black all placed in the top 50.
In the women’s 5K, Megan Thies led the way once again for the Eagles, finishing in 34th place with a time of 19:33.01. Christine Baird (20:51.92, 53rd) and Andrea Griggs (23:33.49, 73rd) each ran a very impressive race as well, as each set new lifetime best times.
Head coach Cassandra Goodson was very pleased with the improvements of both teams, saying, “Every single one of our runners showed a lot of improvement today, and I’m very proud of them for that. Kyle really stepped it up today, nearly breaking the school record, and with Christine and Andrea setting new lifetime bests, along with all of the personal records that we set, I’m very excited for them. Especially considering that this course is one of the more challenging courses that we will run this year.” When asked about the reasons for the improvement, coach Goodson stated, “They are all starting to settle in with the training, and they were all very enthusiastic today. I also noticed everyone seemed to have more confidence in themselves today, which I think comes from the hard work they have each been putting in, day in and day out. That’s really what it’s all about.”
The Eagles cross country teams will be back in action this Friday, October 3rd, as they participate in the Floridarunners.com Invitational in Titusville, Fla. The women’s race is set for 5:40 PM, while the men’s race is scheduled for 6:00 PM.
