Men's Cross Country Voted Seventh in A-Sun Coaches Poll
FORT MYERS, Fla. – After placing eighth in the Atlantic Sun Conference a season ago, the FGCU men’s cross country team was predicted to finish in a share of seventh place in the 2011 preseason poll, alongside Lipscomb, as voted on by the 10 league coaches and announced by the conference office on Wednesday.
The Eagles finished in the top 10 in six of their seven meets last season, highlighted by a second place finish at the season-opening King of the Hill Elite Invitational hosted by Miami.
The Blue and Green return all but one runner from 2010 and are led by sophomore Argeo Cruz (Immokalee, Fla./Immokalee), who owns the top three times on FGCU’s top times list. He placed third among freshmen runners at the conference championship to earn A-Sun All-Freshmen team honors last season.
Kennesaw State was picked to win their third-straight A-Sun Conference title in the poll. The Owls, who placed three student-athletes on the first team all-conference last season, picked up nine first-place votes from the coaches.
Belmont, the host of the 2011 A-Sun Championship, came in second in the preseason tally with the final top vote after finishing second in last year’s championship. North Florida, USC Upstate and ETSU rounded out the top-five of the preseason poll.
The Eagles are set to open the 2011 campaign by hosting the FGCU Invitational. The Invite is set for Friday, September 2, beginning at 6 p.m. at Buckingham Park in Fort Myers, Fla.
