FORT MYERS, Fla. - The FGCU men’s and women’s cross country teams will head to Orlando, Fla. to compete in the 2012 UCF Black and Gold Challenge on Friday, October 12.

The women’s 6k race is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. followed by the men’s 8k scheduled to start at 5:40 p.m. It will mark the first time this season that the women have run an 6k event. This is the second time FGCU has competed in the UCF Black and Gold Challenge. Last season the men’s team finished second out of the 12 teams, while the women’s team finished fourth out of 16.

"The women's team looked really good in training this week and this will be their first 6k of the season,” said head coach Cassandra Goodson. “It will be interesting to see how they handle the distance. The best part of this year’s men's team is we have probably nine guys that on any given day could be our top five. Having that depth is what is going to make this team good. The cohesiveness and synergy are going to be the key to the team's success. If we can really learn to run well as a team, we can have as much depth at the front of races as anyone. At UCF, we are going to work on running as a group through the first 3k and then start to spread out."

The men’s team is coming off a second place finish at the Walt Disney World Classic, which saw junior Argeo Cruz (Immokalee, Fla./Immokalee HS) finish fifth overall with a time of 26:01.18. Senior Alexander Schilling (Dresden Germany/Queens Univ. of Charlotte) also finished in the top 10 when he came in ninth place with a time of 26:27.64.

The women’s team finished third overall at the Walt Disney World Classic with senior Barrie Cohen (Voorhees, NJ/Eastern Regional HS) and junior Kelly Perzanowski (St. Clairsville, Ohio/St. Clairsville HS) placing second and fourth, respectively.

The men’s and women’s teams are looking to improve upon last season’s finishes with this being the final race before the Atlantic Sun Championships. FGCU will place host the Conference Championships, on Saturday October 27, at Buckingham Park.

A total of 17 teams will be competing in this event, including Atlantic Sun Conference opponents UNF, Stetson, and Jacksonville.

Results and recaps from both races will be available at www.FGCUATHLETICS.com at the conclusion of the event.
