FORT MYERS, FL – Sophomore Edison Vasquez posted his second top-12 finish of the season as the Florida Gulf Coast University men’s cross country team finished seventh in a 10-team field at the Embry-Riddle/Smoothie King 8K Classic on Saturday, October 2.
Vasquez (Naples), who set a school record with a time of 26:49 at the 8K Gator Invitational in September, battled the hilly course to finish 11th in a time of 29:53. It was the second-best individual performance by an Eagles runner in school history. Vasquez finished 10th in the Saint Leo Invitational earlier this season. As a freshman, his best finish in a meet had been 17th.
Each of the next six finishers for the Eagles posted their second-fastest times of the young season. Freshman Ronald Jean-Giles (Lely) continued his strong showing in the second spot for FGCU, posting a time of 33:00 to finish 31st. Freshman Bryan Spiewak of Coral Springs (54th in 35:23), freshman Rob Clendening of New Port Richey (55th in 35:43), freshman Lyle Edixon of Fort Myers / Gulf Coast High (57th in 36:06) and senior Chris Hernandez of Fort Myers / Cape Coral Mariner (65th in 38:14) rounded out the times for the Eagles.
The men finished seventh overall with 178 points. Embry-Riddle captured the team title with 38 points.
