FORT MYERS, FL – The Florida Gulf Coast University men’s cross country team put together one of their best efforts of the fall at the 8K Disney Classic in Orlando on Saturday.
Sophomore Edison Vasquez, who set a school record in September at the Gator Invitational, was pushed by a talented field, including numerous Division I athletes, to finish 147th overall in 28:34. His time was the second fastest in school history.
“Edison continues to run stronger and stronger each week,” said coach Chris Highfield. “He has figured out how to put together a complete race and is running the best he has in the past two years."
Freshman Ronald Jean-Giles (Naples/Lely) was second for FGCU, finishing 203rd in 30:54. Classmates Bryan Spiewak of Coral Springs (213th in 31:38), Rob Clendening (225th in 32:03), Lyle Edixon (235th in 33:39) and senior Chris Hernandez of Fort Myers (249th in 35:44) rounded out the times for the Eagles. Both Spiewak and Edixon posted personal records for the 8-K event.
The Eagles finished with 777 points, edging Saint Leo (790) for 26th. The University of Florida, led by individual champion Ryder Leary in a time of 24:46, won the team event.
