FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Florida Gulf Coast University men’s cross country team returns to action after a weekend off when it competes in the Embry-Riddle Cross County Classic in Daytona Beach on Saturday at 7:45 a.m.
The 8-K course is billed as one of the most challenging in the state of Florida. It is a true cross country course that includes all types of terrain, including athletic fields, a 150-meter hill, short sand trail and two road crossings and requires three loops.
Sophomore Mike Sophomore Mike Harney (North Fort Myers, Fla.), who posted the second-fastest 5K time (17:08) in school history at Saint Leo, has led the Eagles in both early races. Juniors Scott Poindexter (Tallahassee, Fla.) and Ismael Galicia (Naples, Fla.) have also run a pair of strong races for FGCU while freshman Grant Berkery (Sarasota, Fla.) and sophomore Bryan Spiewak (Coral Springs, Fla.) have completed the top-five in both races.
This is the second straight season that the Eagles have competed in the event. Last year, Edison Vasquez placed 11th overall to help FGCU finish seventh of 10 teams.
This will be the third meet of the fall for the Eagles, who have finished third at the Saint Leo Invitational and sixth in wet and muddy conditions at Florida Tech. About 10 teams are expected to challenge for the team title this weekend.
