DADE CITY, Fla. – Eight members of the Florida Gulf Coast University men’s cross country team set personal career-bests in the flrunners.com Cross Country Invitational VI at Little Everglades Ranch in Dade City Friday night.
The Eagles finished 10th among the mix of 16 NCAA Division I and II and NAIA schools competing in the 8-K meet, which served as a pre-regional meet for the NCAA Division II South Region Championships scheduled at Little Everglades Ranch in November. Paced by individual winner Tyrone Bell (25:04), Florida Southern captured the team title. North Florida finished second and Clayton College and State ran third.
Sophomore Mike Harney became just the second runner in FGCU history to break 28 minutes, covering the rolling, hilly course in 27: 26 to finish 36th in a field that had more than 130 competitors. Former Eagles standout Edison Vasquez set the school mark with a 26:49 at the Gator Invitational last year.
The next five finishers also set career bests. Junior Scott Poindexter placed 62nd in 28:18, junior Ismael Galicia was 70th in 28:54, and junior Ray Cayo finished 89th in 29:59. Freshman Grant Berkery placed 94th in 30:14, one second better than sophomore Bryan Spiewak while freshman Sean Combs ran 109th in 31:30.
Sophomore Ron Gilles had a season-best 31:44 to place 111th and freshman Adam Ulrich ran a career-best 31:50 to finish 114.
The Eagles will compete in the 10th Annual Walt Disney World Cross Country Classic on Saturday, October 8 at 7:45 a.m.
