FORT MYERS, Fla. – Coming off the their best effort of the fall, the Florida Gulf Coast University men’s cross country team will continue its push for the NCAA Division II regional meet when they compete in the 10th Annual Walt Disney World Cross Country Classic on Saturday in Orlando.
Nine runners produced season-best performances in last weekend’s flrunners.com Invitational VI at Little Everglades Ranch in Dade City, the course that will serve as host of the NCAA South Region championship meet.
Sophomore Mike Harney (North Fort Myers, Fla.) led a contingent of four Eagles to break 30-minutes over the rolling, hilly 8-K course. Harney became just the second runner in FGCU history to break 28:00, finishing 36th in 27:26. Junior Scott Poindexter (Tallahassee, Fla.) ran a season-best 28:18, junior Ismael Galicia (Naples, Fla.) ran a season-best 28:54, and junior Ray Cayo (Lima, Peru) finished in 29:59 in his first collegiate event.
Also producing season-bests were freshman Grant Berkery (Sarasota, Fla.) in 30:14, sophomore Bryan Spiewak (Coral Springs, Fla.) in 30:15, freshman Sean Combs (Naples, Fla.) in 31:30, sophomore Ron Gilles (Naples, Fla.) in 31:44 and freshman Adam Ulrich (Coral Gables, Fla.) in 31:50. FGCU finished 10th overall.
The Disney Classic should provide the Eagles with an opportunity to improve on their times. The 8-K course is a relatively flat, fast course that incorporates sports fields, the Disney Track Complex and wooded trails. 38 schools from as far away as Texas are scheduled to compete in the event, which begins at 7:45 a.m.
The NCAA regional championships are slated for November.
