ORLANDO, Fla. – Sophomore Mike Harney paced the Florida Gulf Coast University men’s cross country team to a 21st place finish in the 10th Annual Walt Disney World Cross Country Classic on Saturday.
Harney posted the fourth-fastest time in FGCU history as he covered the 8-K course in 28:06 to place 85th. He now owns three of the top four races performances in school history and is the only Eagles runner to run at least three races under 28:10 at FGCU.
Junior Scott Poindexter posted the seventh-best time ever at FGCU with a 28:30. Poindexter has now recorded three of the top seven times in school history. Junior Ismael Galicia ran a career-best 28:32, the eighth best time in school history, to finish third among Eagles runners. Junior Ray Cayo (30:54) and freshman Grant Berkery (31:46) completed the team scoring for FGCU. Also competing for the Eagles this week were freshman Adam Ulrich (32:16), freshman Sean Combs (32:36) and sophomore Ron Gilles (32:42).
The University of Florida took only five runners to the meet, the minimum number to be considered a team, and easily outdistanced runner-up Florida Southern by 50 points. Chris Mullaney of Central Florida, which finished third in team scoring, was the individual winner in 25:39.
FGCU competes in their final regular season meet at the Stetson Hatter Invitational on Friday night.
