FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Florida Gulf Coast University men’s cross country team closes out the regular season when they compete in the 16th Annual Hatter Cross Country Invitational on Friday night.
The Eagles will be among 12 teams competing on a challenging campus course at Stetson University. Head coach Chris Highfield thinks his team can continue its strong late season efforts.
“We have been improving week by week and I think we can continue to see that this weekend,” said Highfield, who hopes to have his full team ready to compete in the NCAA Division II South Region Championships scheduled for November 5 at the Little Everglades Ranch in Dade City, Fla. “Every runner has posted a season-best in the past two weeks and three runners have posted times among our all-time best.”
Sophomore Mike Harney (North Fort Myers, Fla.) has led the Eagles in every meet this fall and posted three of the top four 8K times in FGCU history. Junior Scott Poindexter (Tallahassee, Fla.) has posted three of the top seven times in school history while junior Ismael Galicia (Naples, Fla.) has the eighth best time in school history.
FGCU finished 10th in the event a year ago. The men’s 8K event will begin at 5:10 p.m.
