MIAMI, Fla. – The Florida Gulf Coast University cross country teams competed in their first event of the season Friday evening at the Greentree Invitational in Miami. The event was held at Tropical Park and was hosted by the University of Miami. This was the first event for both teams under new head coach Cassandra Goodson.
In the men's four mile run, junior Kyle Brunette led the Eagles with a time of 22:04.40, good for 8th place. Sophomore Joshua Brooks came in 18th with a time of 23:00.06. Richard Black (23:44.51), Tyler Boban (23:56.38), and Hugo Gijon (24:02.62) finished back-to-back in 22nd, 23rd, and 24th place. Tyler Stowell (25:15.64, 26th) and Grant Berkery (25:42.04, 27th) rounded out the top-seven finishers for the Eagles.
For the women's 5K, the Eagles placed a pair of sophomore runners in the top 10. Taylor Cooke paced the Eagles finishing in 6th place with a time of 20:24.59. Megan Thies finished in 20:38.39, good for 8th place. Ashley Williams performed well in her collegiate debut, finishing in 19th place with a time of 23:17.88. Following Williams were four Eagles runners in a row, beginning with Christine Baird (23:19.49, 20th), followed by Marie Scarpantonio (23:48.18, 21st), Stacy Banbury (23:54.89, 22nd), and Andrea Griggs (24:06.45, 23rd).
The Eagles next competition will be the Mountain Dew Gator Invitational hosted by the University of Florida. The event is scheduled for Saturday, September 20. The women's 5K run is set for 8 AM and the men's 8K run is set for 8:30 AM.
