GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The Florida Gulf Coast University cross country teams participated in the 21st Annual Mountain Dew Invitational in Gainesville, Florida, on Friday evening. The women finished ninth out of 23 schools while the men finished 11th out of 18 schools. The races were held at the UF golf course on the campus of the University of Florida.
For the women, Leigh Mumford (Clemson, S.C.)paced the Eagles with a time of19:44.02, good for a 45th place finish. Shannon Compher (Oviedo, Fla.) came in 54th with a time of 19:58.03, while Megan Thies (Brandon, Fla.) was not far behind in 57th place, finishing with a time of 20:04.67. Barrie Cohen (20:32.13, 74th) and Taylor Cooke (20:38.90, 77th) also placed in the top 80 for the Eagles. As a team, FGCU finished in ninth place out of 23 schools, edging out tenth-place Miami by just 11 points. The host Florida Gators won the meet, placing six runners in the top seven. Tampa came in second with USF claiming third.
On the men’s side, Kyle Brunette (Venice, Fla.) led the way for FGCU with 44th place finish, checking in with a time of 27:07.90. Joshua Brooks (Fort Myers, Fla.) took 62nd with a 27:29.50. Joseph Hebel (Naples, Fla.) was the third and final Eagle to crack the top 100, finishing in 96th place with a time of 28:22.50. As a team the Eagles took home 11th place out of the 18 schools. Once again, the host Gators won the meet, placing five runners in the top six. Embry-Riddle took second with North Florida coming in third.
The FGCU cross country teams will have next weekend off before participating in the FloridaRunners.com Invitational on October 2nd. That meet will take place in Titusville, Florida, with the men set to start at 7:30 AM and the women to begin at 8:10 AM.
